Buckeyes Place Third at Big Ten Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 13 Ohio State men's swimming and diving team placed third at the Big Ten Championships, which concluded on Saturday in Minneapolis. This is the 16th consecutive season that the Buckeyes have placed in the top three.
Ohio State earned 10 total medals over four days of competition and finished with 1,100 points. Indiana placed first with 1,579 points and Michigan placed second with 1,148 points.
The Buckeyes opened the day with Mason Edmund winning the silver medal in the 1650 free. He finished in 14:45.8, which is an NCAA B cut. Sam Campbell placed fifth with an NCAA B standard time of 14:49.25. Alex Metzler (14:55.26) and Charlie Clark (14:56.75) finished ninth and 10th, respectively, and both turned in NCAA B cuts.
In the 200 back A final, Cornelius Jahn finished third to win the bronze medal. His time of 1:39.50 is a program record and an NCAA B cut. He broke the record twice on Saturday, first in prelims with a time of 1:40.32, and then again in finals. Jahn had set the previous record of 1:40.66 during the fall at the Ohio State Fall Invitational. In the B final, Martin Perecinsky placed seventh with an NCAA B standard time of 1:43.58.
Tomas Navikonis won his second title of the Big Ten Championships, placing first in the 100 free with an NCAA B cut of 41.55. Navikonis won the 200 free for the second straight year on Friday night. Mario McDonald's and Daniel Baltes' NCAA B standard time of 42.81 earned them a tied-for-fifth finish in the B final. Matt Klinge finished eighth in the B final with an NCAA B standard time of 43.25. In the C final, Evan Fentress turned in an NCAA B cut of 43.19 to place third.
Tristan Jankovics placed second in the 200 breast B final with an NCAA B standard time of 1:54.10. Karl Helmuth finished fourth in the B final with a time of 1:54.73, which is also an NCAA B cut. In the C final, Will Bansberg finished third, touching the wall at 1:56.04, which is an NCAA B standard time.
Jordi Vilchez finished seventh in the B final of the 200 fly with an NCAA B cut of 1:44.50.
Kylie Flory won the consolation final of the platform dive with an NCAA Zones qualifying score of 345.15. Clayton Chaplin placed third with a score of 390.80, which is also an NCAA Zones qualifier.
The Buckeyes closed out the championships with a second-place finish in the 400 free relay. The team of Navikonis, Baltes, McDonald and Jahn swam an automatic NCAA qualifying time of 2:47.47.
Nine Buckeyes earned all-conference honors. Jankovics, Klinge and Navikonis were named to the All-Big Ten First Team, Baltes, Edmund, Jahn, McDonald, Metzler and Vilchez earned All-Big Ten Second Team honors and Jahn, Klinge and Vilchez were selected to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. Fentress was Ohio State's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree.
The Buckeyes host their last chance meet on Sunday, March 9. NCAA Zones will take place at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion March 10-12 and the Buckeyes head to Washington for the NCAA Championships March 26-29.
