William Smith scores overtime winner
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 8/10 Ohio State men's hockey team downed No. 11 Michigan, 2-1 in overtime, Thursday in Value City Arena in Columbus.

After a scoreless first period, Davis Burnside opened the scoring with a power play goal for the Buckeyes in the second. Michigan responded and the teams went into the lockerroom tied at one. Neither team was able to score in the third, sending the game to overtime. Just 1:22 into the extra session, Buckeye blueliner Williams Smith scored to lift the home team to the win. Ohio State was outshot, 27-25, in the game and Buckeye goalie Logan Terness made 26 saves in 61:22, including on a breakaway in overtime. Ohio State was 2-for-2 on the penalty kill in the game, with 1:11 of a 5x3 chance when the game was tied.

The Buckeyes are now 22-9-2 overall, with a 14-7-1 3-2-0 Big Ten ledger, standing in third place in the league with 42 points. Michigan is 17-13-3 with an 11-10-2 5-1-2 B1G mark and in fourth place with 33 points. Â

Regular Season Finale Friday
- The Buckeyes and Wolverines will close the series and regular season at 6 p.m. Friday in Value City Arena.
- The Buckeye Class of 2025 will be recognized pregame, about 5:35 p.m. Fans are encouraged to Wear Scarlet and there will be a pom pom giveaway for all fans and a Burger King crown giveaway for students.

- Parking is free for all men's hockey home games.
- There were no goals in the first period, with Ohio State outshooting Michigan 6-4. A matching set of minors marked the only penalties called.
- On their first power play chance of the night, the Buckeyes took the lead. At 6:29 of the second Davis Burnside one-timed a pass from Riley Thompson to open the scoring. Gunnarwolfe Fontaine had the second assist on the goal, which came 18 seconds after the power play started.
- The Wolverines tied the game at 12:54 when a shot from Philippe Lapointe went off a Buckeye by the net and in.
- The Buckeye penalty kill came up huge in the period to keep the game tied, stopping two chances, including 1:11 of a 5x3 opportunity. Blocks by Damien Carfagna and Brent Johnson and a save from Logan Terness helped keep the Wolverines off the scoreboard.
- Michigan had 15 shots on goal in the second, with Ohio State putting nine on net.
- The teams combined for 15 shots in the third, with Ohio State ahead, 8-7. The Buckeyes had the only power play chance but were held without a shot on goal.
- In overtime, Buckeye goalie Logan Terness made a save on a breakaway.
- On the ensuing faceoff after the breakaway save, the Buckeyes notched the winner at 1:22. Patrick Guzzo won a draw in the Buckeye zone to Brent Johnson, who wrapped the puck around the boards where William Smith picked it up by the Ohio State blueline. He and Guzzo skated up ice on a 2-on-1 and Smith's shot beat the goalie high for the win.
- Ohio State had two shots on goal in overtime, Michigan one.
- For the game, the Buckeyes were outshot, 27-25. Aiden Hansen-Bukata, Theo Wallberg and Carfagna each had two blocks for the Buckeyes, who had 11 as a team.
- Each team had two power play chances and Ohio State had the only goal with the man advantage.
- The Buckeyes are 3-2-2 in overtime this year. The squad fell to the Wolverines in OT Jan. 5 in Ann Arbor.
- Smith's goal was his third of the season.
- Burnside's goal was his 13th of the season and he has 17 assists for 30 points, tying with Thompson for second on the team in scoring. Thompson has 16 goals and 14 assists.
- Fontaine has a team-best 33 points (13g, 20a).
- The Buckeyes are allowing 2.39 goals a game.
- Ohio State has two or fewer power play chances in eight of the last nine games (with three chances in the other game in the stretch).
