COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State is set to open the 114th season of Big Ten basketball with a pair of conference matchups in the next five days. The first of which is on Saturday afternoon at Northwestern. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. and the game will be televised on BTN. Chris Vosters and Jordan Taylor will call the action.
The game can also be heard on the Ohio State Radio Network from Learfield. Neil Sika and former Buckeye captain Ron Stokes are on the call.
- The Buckeyes are 64-49 in Big Ten openers and 41-72 in Big Ten road openers. The last time Ohio State opened Big Ten play on the road and won was the 2021-22 season when Ohio State knocked-off Penn State 76-64.
- The basketball Buckeyes are 5-0 when playing on the same Saturday as the football Buckeyes in the Big Ten Football Championship Game.
- Ohio State has dominated the all-time series with Northwestern 123-51. But as of late, the Wildcats have had the upper hand, winning the last three meetings, including twice in Columbus.
- The Buckeyes are 51-34 all-time in Evanston and 38-18 inside Welsh-Ryan Arena.
- Last year, Northwestern led throughout in a 70-49 victory on Feb. 20. Micah Parrish paced the Buckeyes with 16 points. Bruce Thornton added 13 points and four assists while Sean Stewart scored four points and pulled-down a game-high eight rebounds.
- The Buckeyes haven’t played since Nov. 28 when Pitt hit a running three-pointer at the buzzer to stun the Buckeyes 67-66. That was the second consecutive season in which Pitt hit a three at the horn to win by one.
- Junior wing Devin Royal had his best game of the season at Pitt, scoring a game-high 22 points on a career-best 4-of-8 from long range. Senior guard Bruce Thornton pulled-down a career-high 13 rebounds, shattering his previous high of eight. Thornton also scored 18 points to notch the fourth double-double of his career. The Buckeyes played the entire second-half without third-leading scorer John Mobley Jr., who suffered an ankle injury just before halftime.
- Bruce Thornton leads the team in scoring at 20.6 ppg. He is currently ninth in program history with 1,631 career points and just 25 points behind Jay Burson for 8th place.
- Behind Thornton, Christoph Tilly (15.3 ppg), John Mobley Jr. (14.9 ppg) and Devin Royal (14.0 ppg) are all averaging 14 points or more per game.
- Freshman Amare Bynum has played well thus far, averaging neatly eight points per game and leads the team with 10 offensive rebounds.
- Northwestern opened Big Ten play on Wednesday and fell at Wisconsin 85-73. Nick Martinelli, the reigning Big Ten scoring leader, tops the team at 19.8 ppg. The Wildcats are 3-0 at home this season.
