PITTSBURGH, Pa. – For the second consecutive season, Pitt hits a three-pointer at the buzzer to steal a one-point victory over Ohio State. Damarco Minor made a running shot from just inside half court and Pitt won 67-66 Friday night inside the Petersen Events Center.
This was the first loss of the season for the Buckeyes who are now 6-1.
Senior point guard Bruce Thornton had 18 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. He moved into the Top 10 in scoring in program history, passing both Dave Sorenson (1968-70) and DeShaun Thomas (2011-13) and now has 1,631 career points.
Devin Royal had one of his best games of the young season, scoring a game-high 22 points on 4-of-8 from long range.
Freshman Amare Bynum looked to have made the game-winner as he putback his own miss to give the Buckeyes a 66-64 lead with 3.9 seconds left. Following a timeout, Minor’s shot gave Pitt the win.
The Buckeyes show 43 percent from the floor and was 13-of-15 from the foul line. The difference in the game was 16 offensive rebounds for Pitt along with 13 Buckeye turnovers. That resulted in 15 more shots for the Panthers.
Pitt ran out to a quick 16-4 lead but then the Buckeyes responded with an 11-0 run to weather the initial surge. The Panthers then shoved the lead back out to double digits and would lead 34-24 at the break.
The Buckeyes came out of the break and clawed back to even at 42-42 just seven minutes into the half. They eventually took their first lead on a pair of Christoph Tilly free throws with 8:41 to play. The Buckeyes led by as many as five with four minutes to play.
