COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State will open its 127th season of men’s basketball earlier than ever before when it hosts IU Indy on Monday night. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on B1G+. Gabe Eaker, Connor Canfield and Mason Jarrell will call the action.
The game can also be heard on the Ohio State Radio Network from Learfield. Paul Keels and former Buckeye captain Ron Stokes are on the call.
- Ohio State is 104-21 in season-openers and 107-17 in the home openers.
- Last year, Bruce Thornton scored 20 points and John Mobley Jr. announced his presence by going 4-for-4 from beyond the arc in his collegiate debut as the Buckeyes took down No. 19 Texas 80-72 in the season-opening Hall of Fame Tip-off Classic in Las Vegas.
- This will be the fourth meeting all-time between Ohio State and IU Indy (formally IUPUI). The Buckeyes have won the previous three meetings (2001, 2010 and 2022) but had to vacate the win in 2001.
- Head coach Jake Diebler brought back three of the team’s most impactful players from last season in senior point guard Bruce Thornton, sophomore shooting guard John Mobley Jr. and junior small forward Devin Royal. The three combined to play in all but one game last year and average more than 44 points per game.
- Thornton returns as one of the best guards in the country. He was named to the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Preseason Watch List as well as the preseason All-Big Ten Team. He has started and played in 102 games over the last seasons while being among the nation’s leaders in assist-to-turnover ratio the last two years.
- Royal was named to the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Preseason Watch List. He made a jump from 4.7 ppg to 13.7 ppg last year and has a chance to be one of the more impactful players in the conference this season.
- Mobley Jr. is coming off a season in which he was second in the Big Ten with 77 three-pointers made. He is one of the best shooters in the country and will likely show that he is also one of the top scorers in the country this season.
- Diebler has also brought in two proven experienced big men in 7-foot center Christoph Tilly and 6-8 power forward Brandon Noel. They have combined to play in 183 collegiate games over the last three seasons.
- Freshman Amare Bynum has had a great preseason and will be a player to watch as the season progresses.
- IU Indy is under the direction of first year DI head coach Ben Howlett. Howlett, a Marietta, Ohio native, led DII West Liberty to a record of 217-37 over the last eight seasons. IU Indy was 10-22 last year but has totally revamped its roster as just one player, senior Ajay Holubar, returns from last season.
