COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State senior guard Bruce Thornton had quite the start to the season, leading the Buckeyes to a pair of victories and was named the Big Ten Player of the Week on Monday.
Thornton led the country in points per game during the opening week, averaging 32.0 ppg in wins over IU Indy and Purdue Fort Wayne. He shot a remarkable 77.8 percent from the floor and 58.3 percent from long range. Thornton also averaged 5.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game.
In the win over IU Indy, he was 10-of-12 from the free throw line and finished with a game-high 26 points. Against Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday, he was a career-best 14-of-17 from the floor and registered a career-high 38 points, becoming the first Buckeye with 38 points in a game since Jared Sullinger in 2010.
This is Thornton’s second Big Ten Player of the Week honor as he also garnered the award last December following a 30-point performance against No. 4 Kentucky in Madison Square Garden.
