John “Jack” Varga
Rifle, 1973-77
John “Jack” Varga earned four varsity letters as a member of the rifle team from 1973-77 and was a two-time team captain. An individual Big Ten and sectional champion, Varga helped pioneer the transition of the Western Intercollegiate Rifle Conference to postal matches to maintain the viability of the conference. He was part of Ohio State teams that claimed Big Ten championships and an NRA sectional crown.
After graduating from Ohio State, Varga continued his education at the College of Medicine where he earned his medical degree. He then joined the U.S. Navy where he served 20 years on active duty and competed on the Service Rifle team for 17 years. He was designated a Navy Distinguished Marksman (the only physician and 88th Officer since 1920) and won many 1000-yard Navy matches. In 1993, he was the High Navy shooter at the National Service Rifle Champions
