COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State senior guard Bruce Thornton has been recognized as one of the 20 players for the Naismith Starting 5 - Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Top 20 Preseason Watch List.
The annual Bob Cousy Award, named after the Class of 1971 Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic and Holy Cross guard, celebrates its 22nd year by highlighting the top point guard in Division I men’s college basketball.
Thornton is coming off a season in which he averaged a career-best 17.7 ppg, becoming just the fourth Buckeye over the last 12 years to averaged 17 ppg for a season. He had 148 assists and just 47 turnovers, leading the Big Ten and was Top 10 nationally with a 3.15 assist-to-turnover ratio. He also shot over 50 percent from the floor and was a career-best 42.4 percent from long range.
Thornton will likely be the first Buckeye to be a four-time team captain. He is also on track to finish in the Top 10 in program history in scoring, assists, three-pointers made and career games started. Thornton has scored 1,487 career points and has started and played in all but one game over the past three seasons (102 games).
Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting in each of the three rounds starting on Friday, November 1. In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the 2025 Bob Cousy Award will be narrowed to 10, and then in late February, to just 5. In March, the five finalists will be presented to Cousy and the Hall of Fame’s selection committees, where winners will be selected.
