No. 3 Buckeyes Start Weekend with 5-2 win at No. 5 Virginia

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 3 Ohio State hit the road for the first time this season and opened a big weekend with a solid 5-2 win over No. 5 Virginia in Charlottesville on Friday.
The win improves the Buckeyes to 5-0 on the season and they will look to keep an unblemished record as they head to No. 4 Wake Forest for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday.
The Buckeyes took control of the match early by cruising to the doubles point. They didn’t let Virginia get any momentum at the start of singles, which was key. They clinched the team victory at 4-1 and then split the remaining two matches.
This was the third consecutive win over Virginia as the Buckeyes also won both regular season meetings last year.
Doubles
- The Buckeyes dominated the doubles point and set the tone for the match.
- Brandon Carpico and Nikita Filin rolled to a 6-2 win on court three as they improved to 5-1 on the year as a team.
- Bryce Nakashima and Preston Stearns provided the clinching point as they won 6-3 on court two. Nakashima and Stearns are undefeated at 4-0 on the year.
- Aidan Kim and Will Jansen were up a break in their match 5-3 when the point was decided.
Singles
- Needing just three wins, the Buckeyes took four of the six first sets to keep momentum.
- Virginia put the first singles win on the board as Dylan Dietrich beat Kim 6-4, 6-2 but with the Buckeyes leading other matches, the momentum swing was minimal.
- Jack Anthrop continued his good start as he rolled to a 6-4, 6-0 win on court four to make the score 2-1.
- Chris Li followed with a 6-4, 6-3 win on court six and the Buckeyes were one point away.
- Alexander Bernard provided the clinching point with his 7-5, 6-2 win over No. 86 Mans Dahlberg on court three.
- With the match in hand, the Buckeyes split the final two matches as Will Jansen fell on court two and Bryce Nakashima won in three sets on court five.
