COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State came out on the wrong end of another one-point overtime loss on Friday, falling 77-76 to visiting Indiana.
The Buckeyes have lost three-consecutive games by a total of five points and fall to 10-8 on the year and 2-5 in the conference.
Freshman guard John Mobley Jr. made 5 three-pointers and led the Buckeyes with 22 points and three assists. Point guard Bruce Thornton added 18 points and matched a season high with six rebounds.
Fifth-year guard Micah Parrish had one of his best games of the year, scoring a season-high 19 points to go along with four rebounds and a season high tying three steals.
In tight games, the margins are thin and little things on either side of the ball can determine the outcome. The biggest difference on the stat sheet on Friday came on the offensive glass. Indiana grabbed 14 offensive rebounds and turned them into 17 points. That surpassed the Buckeyes six second chance points on nine offensive rebounds.
For Indiana, Luke Goode made four three-pointers and finished with a career high 23 points. Oumar Ballo recorded a double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds.
The Buckeyes used a 13-4 run late in the first half to build as much as a seven-point and would lead 35-29 at the break. Indiana busted out the locker room and made seven of its first nine shots in the second half to erase the deficit and build a 50-46 lead with 12:50 to play.
The Hoosiers continued to push and went on a 14-3 run to take all momentum and a 68-58 lead with four minutes to play. Mobley Jr. then hit a three and Parrish added five-consecutive points to steal some of the momentum back. A Thornton jumper cut the lead to three with two minutes to play and after empty possessions on both ends, Mobley Jr. knocked down a three out of a timeout to tie the game at 71-71 with 38 seconds to play. Neither team was able to score on its final possession and the game headed to overtime.
In the extra session, Ivan Njegovan put the Buckeyes in front with a nice post move. An old-fashioned three-point play by Thornton kept the Buckeyes in front 76-74 but then a Goode three-pointer off an offensive rebound by Ballo proved to be the winning basket. Mobley Jr. had his shot blocked in the closing seconds and the ball was scooped up by Thornton. His three at the buzzer rattled in and out and Indiana held on.
