COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 9/9 Ohio State women's basketball team (16-0, 5-0 B1G) outlasted Oregon (12-5, 3-3 B1G) on Sunday afternoon at the Schottenstein Center in the teams' first meeting as Big Ten opponents and first ever meeting in Columbus.
Both teams got off to a slow start in the game and Oregon held the 11-8 advantage after 10 minutes. Ohio State used a 27-0 run in the middle of the second quarter and outscored Oregon 31-11 in the quarter to take a 39-22 lead into the locker room. Scoring was even in the third quarter with each team scoring 21 points and the Buckeyes led by a 60-43 margin after 30 minutes. The Buckeyes held off a fourth-quarter push from the Ducks to seal a 69-60 win.
Taylor Thierry was the first in the game to reach double figures and finished the game with a season-high 20 points, tying her career-high three triples made. Jaloni Cambridge (13) and Ajae Petty (13) joined Thierry in double figures. Thierry also recorded her 600th career rebound today. Petty had a season-high 14 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season.
How it Happened
Both offenses started the game slowly as Ajae Petty scored the first points with 7:37 to play in the quarter. Oregon scored the next nine points to lead 9-2 with 4:29 remaining in the quarter. The Buckeyes trailed 11-8 after 10 minutes of play after a second chance make by Kennedy Cambridge with the quarter winding down.
The Ducks opened the second quarter with a pair of free throws before the Buckeyes did the same. After trailing 15-10, Ohio State put together a 12-0 run over two minutes of play to take a 22-15 lead with 6:39 to play in the first half, prompting an Oregon timeout. The Buckeyes extended their run to 27-0 and their lead to 37-15 with 2:37 remaining in the second quarter. The Ducks strung together a 7-0 run and Thierry ended the half with a pair of free throws to send the Buckeyes into the locker room with a 39-22 lead.
The third quarter was back-and-forth, with neither team scoring more than seven unanswered points and each team scoring 21 points in the quarter. J. Cambridge opened the quarter's scoring and scored the Buckeyes' first six points of the quarter. Ohio State scored six of the final eight points of the quarter and led by a 60-43 margin after 30 minutes of play.
Petty opened the fourth quarter with a layup to get into double figures. Oregon strung together a 9-0 run to get within 10 points at 62-52 with six minutes remaining. Both teams entered a scoring drought for the next two minutes of game time before Thierry ended the drought with a layup. The Ducks responded to get within eight points on multiple occasions and the score wrapped up at 69-60.
