
Buckeyes in Action at ITA All-American Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Five members of the Ohio State women's tennis team traveled to the ITA All-American Championships in Cary, N.C., Sept. 21-28. The tournament included prequalifying, qualifying and main draw rounds in singles and doubles.The All-American Championships are the first event of the year where players can earn a berth into the NCAA Championships, which will be held this fall. Ten singles players (eight main draw quarterfinalists and two feed-in consolation finalists) and four doubles teams (four main draw semifinalists) will earn a spot.

Luciana Perry and Sydni Ratliff both had a spot in the 64-player singles main draw and paired up in the 32-team doubles main draw as the No. 3 seed but fell in their first round matches. Perry reached the consolation Round of 16 with two two three-set wins and a walkover victory. The doubles tandem opened consolation action with a straight-set win but fell in a super tiebreak in its next match. Â
Teah Chavez and Audrey Spencer were both in the 128-player singles prequalifying draw and Spencer partnered with Shelly Bereznyak in the 32-team doubles prequalifying bracket. The Buckeyes were 3-0 on day one, with two singles wins and a doubles victory. Chavez posted a second round win before falling to the No. 4 seed, while Spencer dropped her second round match and she and Bereznyak lost their second match. Bereznyak dropped her opening round match in singles qualifying before posting a consolation win.

Main Draw Consolation (Thursday, Sept. 26-Saturday, Sept. 28)
In her first consolation match in singles, Luciana Perry rallied after dropping the first set 6-1 to take both the second and third sets 6-2 and defeat Cal's Jessica Alsola. Sydni Ratliff and Perry advanced in doubles, as they topped Valencia Xu and Valerie Glozman of Stanford, 6-1, 6-4, in their first consolation match.Â
Ratliff dropped her first match in consolation to Carson Tanguilig of UNC, 6-4, 6-3.
Perry's next opponent withdrew with injury, moving her on to the next round, where she defeated No. 12 seed Emma Charney of USC, 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-3. Perry fell from the tournament with a three-set loss to Sofia Johnson of Old Dominion Saturday in the Round of 16, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.Â
In doubles, Ratliff and Perry, the No. 3 seed, were clipped by Illinois' Megan Hauser and Alice Xu, the No. 7 seed, in the consolation quarterfinals, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (6).
Main Draw (Wednesday, Sept. 25)
Sydni Ratliff and Luciana Perry both dropped their opening matches in the main draw. Ratliff fell to No. 1 seed Mary Stoiana of Texas A&M (6-1, 6-1), with Perry falling to No. 4 seed Connie Ma of Stanford (6-4, 6-0).
In doubles, the Buckeye duo was the No. 3 seed. In the opening round, the tandem lost to Cal's Jessica Alsola and Mao Mushika, 6-4, 6-4.
Qualifying (Monday, Sept. 23 & Tuesday, Sept. 24)
In her first match in the qualifying draw, Shelly Bereznyak fell to Talia Neilson-Gatenby of Florida, 6-0, 6-0. Tuesday, Bereznyak was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Stephanie Yakoff of Harvard.Â
Prequalifying (Saturday, Sept. 21 & Sunday, Sept. 22)
 Audrey Spencer and Teah Chavez both notched first-round wins. Spencer downed Michela Moore of Dartmouth, 6-2, 7-6 (5). Chavez prevailed in three sets against Kaitlyn Carnicella of South Carolina, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (1).Â
In doubles, Spencer and Shelly Berezynak were 7-6 (3), 6-1 winners against Leonie Moeller and Alice Amendola of Memphis.Â
Sunday morning, Chavez downed Baylor's Zuzanna Kubacha in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, to advance to the third round. Spencer dropped a three-set decision to Akari Matsuno of Notre Dame, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. In the third round, Chavez fell to the No. 4 seed, Gabby Rivera, 7-6 (3), 6-2, with the LSU Tiger advancing to the qualifying draw.
In the second round of doubles, Bereznyak and Spencer were defeated by Iowa's Barbora Pokorna and Tereza Denjozkova, 6-3, 6-4.

The Fall Slate
- Next up for the Buckeyes is the Notre Dame Invitational Oct. 4-6 in South Bend, Ind.
- Ohio State will then host the ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the Auer Tennis Complex Oct. 10-14. Admission is free to the tournament.
- The UT Home Invitational follows Oct. 25-27 in Knoxville, Tenn.
- Two individual tournaments, the ITA Central Section Championships and ITA Conference Masters Championships will be held Nov. 7-10.
- The NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships have been moved to the fall and will be contested Nov. 19-24 in Waco, Texas. Players can earn berths into the national championships through the four ITA events in the fall (starting with this week's All-American Championships).
