Buckeyes Open Big Ten Play With Shutout over Michigan State

Ohio State scores three times in the first quarter and improves to 7-0 on the season
COLUMBUS, Ohio – A hot first quarter lifted No. 6 Ohio State over the Michigan State Spartans (4-3) by a 4-0 final. The Buckeyes out-shot the Spartans 19-8 and junior forward Lindsey Roberts notched a career-high two goals.
How it Happened
Ohio State's aggressive offense got off to a quick start on Friday, scoring at the 2:32 minute mark on a penalty corner opportunity. The Buckeyes found the back of the cage again in the 10th minute, then scored again less than a minute later to go up 3-0. Ohio State totaled nine shots in the first half, six of them on goal.
After a scoreless third quarter, Ohio State struck again in the fourth, driving down the field to find the open cage. Michigan State couldn't find an answer, leaving the score at 4-0.
How The Goals Were Scored
- Katie Fichtner struck first for the Buckeyes, scoring off a penalty corner to notch her fourth goal of the season. Forward Makenna Webster and midfielder Claudia Thomas assisted.
- Junior Lindsey Roberts scored her fourth goal of the year at the 10:30 minute mark thanks to an assist by Zella Bailey.
- Less than a minute later, Makenna Webster scored Ohio State's third goal, finding the cage on her own penalty corner. Webster now sits at seven goals, seven assists and 21 points on the season.
- Roberts found the goal again in the 49th minute after a drive down the field by Webster. The forward's two goals in the match are a career high.
Buckeye This and That
- Ohio State's 7-0 start to the season is the best since 2006, where the Buckeyes finished 15-4 and went on to win the Big Ten. A win against Brown on Sunday would tie the program record for best start to the season at 8-0
- In addition to today, four of this year's wins have been shutouts: Colgate (5-0), No. 10 Syracuse (5-0) and Richmond (2-0)
- Today's win marked Abby Danson's 40th in her career, enough to tie her for first in program history. Danson also notched two saves on the night.
- Webster has scored at least one point in all seven games this season, and totals a team-high 21 points (7G, 7A).
- Ohio State has bested the Michigan State eight straight times. The Buckeyes now hold 46 wins against the Spartans.
- The Buckeyes generated 10 penalty corners in the game – the fourth time they've been in double figures in that category this year. Ohio State has a 59-23 advantage over its opponents in corners this season.
