Student-Athletes to Earn Degrees at Summer Commencement

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sunday, 42 current and former Ohio State student-athletes will receive degrees as the University holds Summer Commencement ceremonies at 2 p.m. in the Schottenstein Center.

- Devin Smith, a starting wide receiver on the 2014 College Football Playoff national championship team who ranks third in school history with 30 receiving touchdowns, is sixth with 2,503 receiving yards and stands 15th with 121 receptions, will graduate through the school's degree completion program with his degree in communications.
- Jenn Gardiner captained the women's hockey Buckeyes to their second national championship this past season and she and Riley Brengman were also members of the team's first national title in 2021-22. Cayla Barnes, Hannah Bilka, Kelsey King and Kiara Zanon were also part of the 2023-24 NCAA title team.
- Lyle Yost is a two-time NCAA champion on the 1-meter springboard, winning titles in 2023 and 2024. He was the 2023 CSCAA Diver of the Year and has earned First Team All-America honors on the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform multiple times throughout his five-year career.Â
- Emily Armstrong and Caroline Walsh helped the artistic swimming Buckeyes to back-to-back national titles in 2022 and 2023. Armstrong is also a trio and duet national champion for Ohio State.
- During her three years at Ohio State, Taylor Thierry has helped lead the women's basketball Buckeyes to two Big Ten regular season championships (including the first outright title since the 2009-10 season) and the program's first Elite Eight appearance in 30 years in 2022-23. Thierry is a two-time All-Big Ten selection and has also earned a spot on the All-Big Ten Defensive and All-Big Ten Tournament teams. She nears 1,000 career points to begin her fourth year as a Buckeye.Â
- Wrestler Carson Kharchla owns a 52-12 overall and 20-3 dual record as a Buckeye over his career. He earned All-America status with a Top 8 finish at the NCAA Wrestling Championships in 2022. He is a four-time Academic All-Big Ten and Ohio State Scholar-Athlete award winner and was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar in 2024. Â
- Sarah Sue Morbitzer of the women's volleyball team is a Big Ten Sportsmanship honoree and Ohio State's selection for the overall award in 2024. She also earned Academic All-Big Ten honors and Ohio State Scholar-Athlete status every season. From beginning her career as a walk-on to earning a scholarship and being a team captain, Morbitzer made her mark on the program and community. After undergoing an innovative heart procedure right before her freshman season, she used her platform to spread awareness and also wrote/published a children's book about it.
- The Buckeye women's track and field record holder in both the indoor and outdoor high jump, Amaya Ugarte is also a two-time Second Team All-America honoree in the indoor high jump. The 2023 Big Ten indoor high jump champion was also named First Team All-Big Ten in 2023 and graduates as the best high jumper in the program's history. She helped the Buckeye women to a record-breaking 2022 Big Ten Outdoor Championship with 185.5 points as a team.Â
- Men's basketball standout Greg Oden, who is earning his sport coaching master's degree, will be enshrined in the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame this fall. He was the National Defensive Player of the Year and helped lead the Buckeyes to a national championship game appearance in 2006-07, when he was also named a Second Team All-American, the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and the Pete Newell Big Man Award winner. He went on to be the No. 1 selection in the 2007 NBA Draft.
- Marcia Sey is a two-time women's track and field All-American, earning her spot on the second team as a member of the 4x100m relay in the 2024 outdoor season and an honorable mention nod for the 60m hurdles in 2023. She helped the Buckeye women to a record-breaking 2022 Big Ten Outdoor Championship with 185.5 points as a team.Â
- Rower Tess Thompson is a four-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, Academic All-Big Ten and Ohio State Scholar-Athlete honoree. She is the only Ohio State rower in history to earn the NCAA Elite 90 Award, given annually to the student athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average at each NCAA finals site. She earned the honor in 2023 at the NCAA women's rowing championships.
