Ohio State to Play in The Frozen Confines at Wrigley Field

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men's and women's hockey programs will take part in The Frozen Confines: Big Ten Hockey Series in January of 2025, the Big Ten Conference and Chicago Cubs announced Thursday. The outdoor games will be played in Chicago at Wrigley Field.

The Frozen Confines will feature three Big Ten men's hockey games, plus a Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) women's game, the weekend of January 3-4, 2025. Big Ten Network will carry all four games live. While the order of games is pending, start times are set for 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. CT on January 3 and for 4:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. CT on January 4. The game pairings are: Friday, January 3, 2025: Penn State vs. Notre Dame, Ohio State vs. Michigan, Saturday, January 4, 2025: Ohio State vs. Wisconsin (WCHA), Wisconsin vs. Michigan State.

The Buckeye women's matchup against the Badgers will be the second of a weekend series between the teams. Game one will be played Thursday, Jan. 2 in Madison, Wis., replacing the previously scheduled series in February.

The game in Chicago will be the fifth outdoor game for the Buckeye men in the modern era. Ohio State played at the Packers' Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis., in 2006 and faced Michigan at Progressive Field, home of the Cleveland Guardians, in January 2012. The Buckeyes played outdoors at Huntington Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, hosted by the Minnesota Golden Gophers on their football field, in January 2014. In February 2023, the Buckeyes defeated the Wolverines in Cleveland Browns Stadium in front of an Ohio State record crowd of 45,523.

The Buckeye women have played in one outdoor game, facing off against Minnesota during 2020's Hockey Day Minnesota.

The weekend of college hockey follows the Discover NHL Winter Classic® between the St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks on December 31, 2024, the second NHL Winter Classic to be held at Wrigley Field.

In addition to the hockey teams, the Ohio State football team will also play at Wrigley Field this year. The Buckeyes play Northwestern Nov. 16 at the Friendly Confines.
