COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Department of Athletics announced Monday the synchronized swimming program will now compete under the name of artistic swimming. The name change aligns with the sport's rebrand on both the national and international levels.Â
"We have respectfully taken our time to make this name change, allowing what we feel to be a smooth transition between our past, present and future connections with our program's rich history," Ohio State head coach Holly Vargo Brown said. "We are definitely excited to align with artistic swimming programs across the United States and around the world, recognizing the name change more accurately reflects the unique characteristics of this amazing sport. "
Following the 2016 Olympics in Rio, FINA – now known as World Aquatics – announced the rebranding of synchronized swimming to artistic swimming. The United States' national governing body voted to adopt the name in 2020 and become USA Artistic Swimming. Ohio State will now follow suit with the name change and corresponding social handles – @OhioStateArtisticSwim on Facebook and Instagram and @OhioStArtSwim on X.Â
"We hope that this announcement leading up to the 2024 Paris Olympics will add energy and support to the amazing artistic swimmers who have qualified to compete at the highest level, including Buckeyes Ruby Remati, Keana Hunter and Scarlett Finn," Vargo Brown said.
