COLUMBUS, Ohio – For the second-consecutive year, Ohio State Athletics has been recognized as a Waste Champion by the Green Sports Alliance (GSA). The honor was presented at the 2024 GSA Summit held at L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles.
The department earned the GSA Play to Zero Award by achieving more than a 90 percent diversion rate from landfill. This national award includes recognition among professional sports and corporate organizations as well.
"We are honored to once again be recognized as a Waste Champion by the Green Sports Alliance," Cecil Okotah, Ohio State's environmental sustainability specialist, said. "Achieving the GSA Play to Zero Award reflects our commitment to diverting 90 percent or more of waste from landfills. This recognition is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our operations team and collaborators."
The Play to Zero awards recognizes sports organizations that show, via Play to Zero or other tracking platforms, significant reductions or diversions in waste, water, and/or energy use at their venues. These awards highlight continuous improvements in building-level sustainability around waste, water, and energy use management.
Ohio State was recognized for the same honor at the 2023 GSA Summit in Seattle.
