COLUMBUS, Ohio – Associated Press, U.S. Basketball Writers' Association and The Sporting News All-American Jacy Sheldon (women's basketball) and ITA national indoor team champion JJ Tracy (men's tennis) are Ohio State's 2024 Athletes of the Year. Both will now be placed on the ballots for Big Ten Athlete of the Year awards, with the winners to be announced by the conference later this month.
In her final season at Ohio State, Sheldon continued to lead the Buckeyes to success. The second team All-American was also a top-five finalist for the Nancy Lieberman Award and a regional finalist for the WBCA Coaches' All-America Team after being on countless national watch lists throughout the season. Sheldon was selected to the All-Big Ten First Team by both the league's coaches and media (unanimous selection by coaches) and the All-Big Ten Defensive Team by the media. Sheldon led the Buckeyes to an outright regular season Big Ten Championship for the first time since the 2009-10 season as Ohio State went 16-2 in conference play. The Buckeyes also strung together a 15-game win streak in conference play – the second-longest Big Ten win streak in program history.
Sheldon wrapped up her Buckeye career as one of three players in program history to total at least 1,900 points, 400 rebounds, 350 assists, 200 steals and 150 made triples during their career. One of the most versatile players in program history, Sheldon ranks fourth in free throw percentage (.850), sixth in steals (250), sixth in scoring (2,024), eighth in field goals attempted (1,494), ninth in field goals made (734), ninth in three-pointers attempted (534), 10th in three-pointers made (187), 10th in free throws made (369), 11th in assists (399) and 14th in free throws attempted (434). She also earned Academic All-Big Ten and OSU Scholar Athlete honors as well as the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award this season. Sheldon was selected fifth overall by the Dallas Wings in the 2024 WNBA Draft.
Tracy had a remarkable final season. He started the year by winning the doubles title at the ITA All-American Championship and ended the year by becoming part of just the third Buckeye duo to win an NCAA doubles national championship. In between, he helped the Buckeyes win their third ITA Indoor Team National Championship, an 18th consecutive Big Ten title, a 17th Big Ten Tournament title and reach the semifinals of the NCAA Championship.
Individually, the Powell, Ohio native earned All-America honors in both singles and doubles, was a unanimous first team All-Big Ten honoree and was the ITA Midwest Regional Senior Player of the Year. He had a remarkable combined record of 77-12 on the year as the 77 wins were second-most in a single-season in school history. He finished his career with 235 career victories, the fifth-most in program history.
