2024 Big Ten Rowing Championships Central | Final Results
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The No. 12 Ohio State finished fourth at the 2024 Big Ten Championships Sunday at Devil's Lake in Baraboo, Wisconsin. Temperatures were in the 60s under sunny skies to start the day of racing.
Michigan was the league champion with 189 points ahead of No. 2 Indiana (144) and No. 3 Rutgers (137) and Ohio State (121).
The Big Ten Network rebroadcast of the championship is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. May 26.
How it Happened
In the final race of the day, the Buckeyes were the No. 4 seed in the first varsity eight competition. Starting from lane 6, Ohio State shot out to a quick start to trail slightly behind Michigan and Indiana. The Buckeyes started to make a charge for second at 1,000 meters but could not catch the Hoosiers to finish third.
With two races to go, Ohio State was in second-place overall with 55 points behind Michigan with 69. The Buckeyes' second varsity eight entered as the No. 1 seed in lane 4. After a restart, Indiana started fast with the Buckeyes close behind. Michigan got the lead at 500 meters with Ohio State and the Hoosiers clashing for the No. 2 spot. Rutgers entered the fray for second at 1,000 meters to overcome the Buckeyes and Indiana. Michigan got the win ahead of Rutgers and Indiana. Ohio State fell back to finish in the No. 7 spot after the Buckeyes lost an oar that got caught up under the boat with about 300 meters left in the race.
In the first race of the NCAA championship competition boats (1V4, 2V8, 1V8), Ohio State's first varsity four started in lane 6 as the No. 4 seed. Michigan started in the lead with Rutgers and the Buckeyes close behind over the first 500 meters. Ohio State started to gain some advantage over the Scarlet Knights for second place at the halfway point. Michigan kept the lead for the win with the Buckeyes easily taking second.
In the second varsity four competition, The Buckeyes were the No. 2 seed racing in lane 5. Ohio State was out in front early by a slight margin. The Buckeyes began to get some separation at about 1,000 meters over Michigan. At 1,500 meters, Ohio State had an open-water lead over the Wolverines and finished off the race with the win, the 56th individual boat victory at the Big Ten Championship Regatta in Ohio State history.
In the first race of the four boats, Ohio State's third varsity four was in lane four as the No. 1 seed. The Buckeyes got a clean start and took the early lead. Rutgers was not far behind after the first 500 meters. The Scarlet Knights took the lead just before the midway point. Rutgers pulled away to hold off Michigan, who overtook the third-place Buckeyes in the final 500 meters.
In lane 2, the fifth-seeded Buckeyes came out of the pack about midway through the third varsity eight race. At the end of the 2,000-meter battle, Ohio State took sixth in a photo finish with No. 5 Iowa.
In the first race of the day, Ohio State was seeded sixth in the fourth varsity eight competition. From lane seven, the Buckeyes battled Iowa and Minnesota for most of the race for second place behind Michigan. Over the final 250 meters, Iowa held off the Buckeyes, who finished third.
This is the fifth season Ohio State is under the direction of head coach Kate Sweeney.
In all, Ohio State owns 10 Big Ten championships and 56 individual boat titles. The Buckeyes have finished first or second in 12 of the last 13 league championships.
