COLUMBUS, Ohio – On a breezy Sunday afternoon, No. 1 Ohio State had little trouble beating rival Michigan, sweeping the Wolverines 4-0 to cap a perfect weekend.
The Buckeyes remain atop of the Big Ten standings as the only unbeaten team at 7-0. They also improve to 25-1 overall on the season.
The doubles point was a roller coaster. All three courts traded breaks back and forth throughout the match. Cannon Kingsley and Jack Anthrop raced out to a 3-0 lead on court three. They then lost the next three games before winning the ensuing three games to win the match 6-3. Michigan got even with a 6-4 win on court two, leaving the point to be decided by Robert Cash and JJ Tracy on court one. Fittingly, the match went to a tiebreaker and it was all Buckeyes in the breaker. Cash and Tracy rolled past Gavin Young and Jacob Bickersteth 7-1 to clinch the point.
In singles, the wind seemed to pick up and really affected the matches. But the Buckeyes held strong as they won all six opening sets. Tracy was the first to finish as he rolled past an over-matched Patorn Hanchaikul 6-2, 6-2. Jack Anthrop then quieted Bjorn Swenson with a 6-3, 6-4 victory to put the Buckeyes in front 3-0.
The clinching point once again came from Alexander Bernard as he beat Will Cooksey 7-5, 6-4 on court five.
The Buckeyes are now just a win away from clinching a share of their 18th consecutive Big Ten title. They will close the regular season on the road next weekend with matches at Nebraska on Friday and Wisconsin on Sunday. Those teams have a combined four Big Ten victories this season.
