COLUMBUS, Ohio – Top-ranked Ohio State heads out on its spring break road trip for a pair of matches next week in the Lonestar State. The Buckeyes will take on No. 12 Texas on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. ET and then head to College Station to face No. 10 Texas A&M on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. ET.
- Ohio State leads the all-time series with Texas 11-9. The teams have met at least once every year since 2014 (with the exception of 2021 during COVID times). The Buckeyes own a 9-4 mark in those matches.
- Last year, the teams split a pair of matches. The Buckeyes won 4-0 in Columbus on Feb. 5, but Texas would win a close 4-3 match in the quarterfinals of the ITA Indoor Team Championships in Chicago.
- The Buckeyes are just 1-4 all-time in Austin with the lone win coming in its last trip. After winning a close doubles point, Ohio State raced to a 3-0 lead and then held on for a 4-3 victory on March 12, 2022. Matej Vocel took down #32 Richard Ciamarra 6-4, 6-2 on court two and then Andrew Lutschaunig beat Evin McDonald 6-1, 6-3 on court six to push the lead to 3-0. After three Longhorn wins, the final point came from then sophomore JJ Tracy as he outlasted Siem Woldeab on court four 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.
- Texas is 9-3 on the season and is coming off a hard-fought 4-3 setback at No. 2 TCU last Saturday. Other common opponents between the two teams are Virginia and South Carolina. Texas lost 4-3 at home to Virginia on Jan. 18 and then beat South Carolina 5-0 on Feb. 18. The Longhorns lost their round of 16 match to Arizona at the ITA Indoor Team Championship last month but then rallied to beat Michigan and South Carolina.
- The match Wednesday night will be the 20th all-time meeting between Ohio State and Texas A&M. The Buckeyes lead the series 11-8 but are just 2-7 all-time in College Station. One of those wins came in their last trip, a 5-2 win on March 15, 2022. Last year, the Buckeyes blanked A&M 7-0 on Feb. 3 in Columbus.
- Texas A&M is 10-3 on the season and will open SEC play this weekend against Mississippi State and Ole Miss. The Aggies will also play UTRGV at 1 p.m. ET next Wednesday before that evening’s match. A&M beat South Carolina in its first match at the ITA Indoor Team Championship but then lost to both TCU and Arizona in its next two matches.
- On the year, Ohio State is undefeated at 16-0 and owns nine wins against Top 25 ranked teams.
- Of the current Top 10, the Buckeyes have beaten No. 2 TCU, No. 3 Virginia, No. 4 Wake Forest and No. 8 Harvard.
- The Buckeyes are looking to match, and perhaps, set the best start to a season in program history. In 2014, Ohio State ran off 17 wins to open the season before falling at Oklahoma. The last time they started 16-0 was during the 2019 season, and in that year, the streak was stopped in Texas as they lost both matches of their spring break trip to Texas and Texas A&M.
- So far this season, the Buckeyes have lost the doubles point to five times Top 25 teams but have come back to win the team match with a dominant showing in singles.
- The Buckeyes have lost just five total singles matches during the dual season.
- Director of tennis Ty Tucker is in his 25th season and recently, claimed his 700th career victory. He has a remarkable career record of 701-101 (.874) and has guided the Scarlet and Gray to 17 consecutive Big Ten regular-season titles, 14 B1G Tournament crowns and 13 seasons of 30 or more wins.
- The Buckeyes have five players ranked in the current singles rankings. JJ Tracy leads the way at No. 7. Jack Anthrop is No. 16 and Cannon Kingsley is up to a season-high No. 17. Justin Boulais is No. 32 and Alexander Bernard is No. 91.
- In doubles, Tracy and Cash are ranked No. 5 while Tracy and Bernard are No. 30.
- JJ Tracy leads the team this season with 23 singles wins and 20 doubles wins.
- Robert Cash is just eight doubles wins shy of Peter Kobelt’s (2011-14) program record of 139 career doubles victories. Cash is 19-4 this season in doubles.
- Cannon Kingsley is three singles wins shy of 100 for his career.
- Jack Anthrop is tied with Tracy with a team-high 23 singles wins this season.
- Anthrop, Tracy and Alexander Bernard are the three Buckeye starters who have not lost a dual singles match so far this season.
