McGuff Named Big Ten Coach of the Year as Six Buckeyes are Honored with Big Ten Awards

The Big Ten Conference announced its awards on Tuesday following the conclusion of the regular season.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Big Ten Conference announced its end of season awards on Tuesday following the final weekend of the regular season. Six Buckeyes were honored by the league's coaches and/or media. View the full list of award winners HERE.
Both the Big Ten head coaches and media selected Kevin McGuff as the Big Ten Coach of the Year. Both the coaches and media named Jacy Sheldon and Cotie McMahon to the All-Big Ten First Team (with Sheldon a unanimous choice among the coaches) and Celeste Taylor and Taylor Thierry to the All-Big Ten Second Team. The groups also agreed on the selection of Taylor to the All-Big Ten Defensive Team. Taylor was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year by the league's coaches. The media also named Sheldon to the All-Big Ten Defensive Team and Rebeka Mikulášiková as an All-Big Ten honorable mention. Sheldon was also Ohio State's sportsmanship award winner.
McGuff has led the Buckeyes to a 25-4 overall record and 16-2 conference record this season, clinching the program's league-leading 16th regular season championship and first outright title since the 2009-10 season. He made the Naismith Coach of the Year Late Season Watch List for the third time in the past four seasons and earned OSU's second regular season title in the past three. The Buckeyes tied their highest ranking in program history (No. 2 in the AP Poll) in each of the past two seasons. This season, Ohio State put together its second longest win streak in conference play in program history, going undefeated in January and February to win 15-consecutive Big Ten games. The Buckeyes have four ranked wins this season with two of those coming against top-10 opponents.
Taylor was on the preseason watch lists for the Naismith Trophy, Wooden Award and Ann Meyers Drysdale Award. She was also named to the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Watch List. Taylor was named ESPN Player of the Week (Feb. 26), Big Ten Player of the Week (Dec. 4) and to the Big Ten Weekly Honor Roll (Feb. 26). Taylor leads the Big Ten in steals per game (2.2) and is eighth in blocks per game (0.9). Taylor has scored at least 10 points in 17 games this season and boasts a pair of double-doubles and a pair of 20-point performances. She recently surpassed 1,500 career points and adds 686 career rebounds, 328 career assists and 281 career steals. This season, Taylor is averaging 10.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.2 steals per game.
Sheldon was named as one of the five finalists for the Nancy Lieberman Award yesterday after being named to the preseason watch list and midseason top-10. Previously this season, she's been named to the preseason and midseason watch lists for the Naismith Trophy, the preseason, midseason and late season watch lists for the Wooden Award and the watchlist for the Ann Meyers Drysdale USBWA National Player of the Year award. Sheldon was also named preseason All-Big Ten, twice to the USBWA National Starting Five (Dec. 27, Feb. 6) and was on Monday's Big Ten Weekly Honor Roll. Sheldon ranks in the top-10 in the Big Ten in five categories – third in scoring (18.2), fourth in steals/game (2.1), fourth in free throw percentage (.869), sixth in field goal percentage (.513) and seventh in assist/turnover ratio (1.6). She sits eighth in program history with 1,982 career points and is in the top-14 in nine additional categories. Sheldon is one of three players in program history with 1,900 points, 400 rebounds, 350 assists, 200 steals and 150 made three-pointers.
McMahon adds this to her long list of accolades this season. She was also named to the preseason and midseason watch lists for the Cheryl Miller Award, Naismith Trophy, Wooden Award and the watch list for the Ann Meyers Drysdale USBWA National Player of the Year. She was named an honorable mention preseason AP All-American and preseason All-Big Ten. McMahon's weekly awards include Naismith Trophy National Player of the Week, AP National Player of the Week, Big Ten Player of the Week, USBWA National Starting Five (twice and the Big Ten Weekly Honor Roll (twice). McMahon is averaging 14.1 points per game and a team-high 6.4 rebounds per game this season, while totaling five double-doubles and 23 double-figure performances. Though only in her second collegiate season, the 2023 Big Ten Freshman of the Year has 953 career points and 384 career rebounds.
Thierry was named to the Big Ten Weekly Honor Roll on Nov. 27, the Buckeyes' first weekly award this season. She leads the Buckeyes in field goal percentage (.620) and three-point percentage (.481) among those with at least five attempts, ranks second in rebounding (5.5 rpg) and blocks (16) and is third in scoring (11.4 ppg) and steals (52). Thierry has scored in double figures 20 times this season and has a pair of double-doubles. Out of 29 games this season, Thierry has won the opening tip in 23 of them. In her Buckeye career, Thierry sits at 903 points and 496 rebounds and is tied for 19th in program history with 155 steals.
Mikulášiková is averaging 9.3 points and 3.1 rebounds per game this season and ranks third on the roster among players with at least five attempts in field goal percentage (.476), three-point percentage (.393) and assists (71). She leads Buckeyes with more than two free throw attempts in free throw percentage (.893). Mikulášiková has scored in double figures 14 times this season and had a 20-point game as well. She became the 37th player in program history to surpass 1,000 career points and currently ranks 27th with 1,195 points as a Buckeye. Mikulášiková also ranks 16th in program history in three-pointers made (126), 17th in three-pointers attempted (369) and is approaching 500 career rebounds (494).
