Buckeyes Set for NCAA Championships in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Nine Ohio State fencers are set to compete in the 2024 NCAA Fencing Championships this week in Columbus. The championships will be held Thursday through Sunday in French Field House and St. John Arena.

The Schedule

The women will compete Thursday and Friday, with the men's competition Saturday and Sunday. Preliminary rounds will be in French Field House, with semifinals and finals in St. John Arena.
Thursday and Saturday, epee will start at 9 a.m., with foil beginning at 11 a.m. and sabre at 1:30 p.m. (women)/1 p.m. (men).
All three weapons are slated to start at 9 a.m. Friday and Sunday, with semifinal and championship bouts beginning at 1:30 p.m. The six semifinal bouts will be fenced on one strip, sequentially in order of epee, foil, sabre. Finals bouts will follow the semifinals, in the same order.
Friday an awards ceremony for the men's individual champions and Top 8 finishers will follow the finals. Sunday the awards ceremony for the women's individual champions and Top 8 finishers and the Top 3 teams will follow the finals.

The Format
At the championships, fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After round-robin, the Top 4 finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with winners fencing to determine first and second places and non-advancing fencers awarded a tie for third place. An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes during round-robin competition.

The Buckeye Competitors
The nine Buckeyes selected include a four-time qualifier, three three-time participants and two who are making their second consecutive trip, along with three first-time selections. The group has combined for eight All-America accolades.

Women
Epee: Montserrat Viveros (5th year, Asuncion, Paraguay) - Now a four-time NCAA qualifier and making third trip to championship site (2020 Championships canceled) … 2022 Second Team All-American with seventh-place finish … was 16th at 2023 event … named a First Team All-American as a freshman in 2020 … placed fourth at NCAA Regional this year, her fourth Top 5 finish at a regional … four-time Second Team All-Midwest Region honoree, including this season.
Epee: Yeva Mazur (women's epee) – Three-time NCAA qualifier … two-time Honorable Mention All-American (2022, '23) … 12th at 2023 NCAA Championships and 11th in 2022 … placed seventh at NCAA regionals this year … three-time all-region choice, with second team honors in 2022 and honorable mention accolades in 2024 and 2023 … 2024 CCFC silver medalist and 2023 gold medal winner.

Foil: Alina Lee (Jr., Dublin, Calif.) – NCAA qualifier for the third year in a row … placed 18th in 2023 and was 12th in 2022 to earn Honorable Mention All-America accolades … silver medalist at NCAA Regionals this year, her third Top 5 regional finish … three-time all-region honoree, including first team accolades in 2024.
Foil: Dariia Myroniuk (So., Kiev, Ukraine) – Making second straight NCAA appearance … finished seventh in 2023 to earn Second Team All-America accolades … fourth at regionals in 2024, with silver medal in 2023 … back-to-back CCFC individual champion … two-time Second Team All-Midwest Region.

Men
Epee: Paul Veltrup (Jr., Grefrath, Germany) – Two-time NCAA qualifier … 2023 NCAA runner-up and a First Team All-American … earned bronze medal at NCAA Regionals for second straight year … received third all-region honor this year (2023 and 2024 second team, 2022 honorable mention).
Epee: Miles Weiss (Jr., Houston, Texas) – Making NCAA Championships debut … placed fourth at NCAA Regionals this year … earned Second Team All-Region honors in 2024 after honorable mention recognition in 2022 … tied for third at conference championships this season and was the gold medalist in 2023.

Foil: Edriss Ndiaye (Sr., Rockville, Md.) – Making third consecutive NCAA appearance … NCAA Regional gold medalist this year and was the CCFC champion as well … placed 11th in 2023 to earn Honorable Mention All-America accolades … was 19th in 2022 in NCAA debut … named first team all-region this year and was an honorable mention choice in 2023.
Foil: Justin Vogler (Jr., Portland, Ore.) – Earned first NCAA selection … finished fourth at NCAA Regionals for second year in a row … Second Team All-Midwest Region this year.

Sabre: Luca Fioretto (Fr., Rome, Italy) – Earned NCAA spot in first collegiate season … silver medalist at NCAA Regionals … 2024 First Team All-Midwest Region … runner-up at 2024 CCFC Championships.

Ohio State NCAA History

Ohio State won combined NCAA team titles in 2004, 2008 and 2012 and the men's national crown in 1942.
Ohio State finished fifth as a team at both the 2023 and 2022 NCAA Championships.
Buckeyes have claimed 18 individual NCAA titles – five in men's epee, one in women's epee, seven in men's foil, two in women's foil and three in men's sabre.
Current associate head coach Katarzyana Dabrowa won the women's epee title in 2012.
Ohio State has had a Top 2 finisher in men's epee for four consecutive years when the Buckeyes were at the final site, including 2023 runner-up Paul Veltrup, 2022 champion Gabriel Feinberg, 2019 champ Oliver Shindler and 2018 gold medalist Marc-Antoine Blais-Belanger.
Women's championships started in 1982 and the first combined championship was in 1984.
