COLUMBUS, Ohio – When Ohio State hosts the 2024 NCAA Fencing Championships March 21-24, nine Buckeyes will be representing the Buckeyes, the NCAA announced Tuesday. The championships will be held March 21-24 in French Field House and St. John Arena in Columbus.
The Buckeye Selections
Four epeeists were selected, with Montserrat Viveros and Yeva Mazur chosen for the women's event and Paul Veltrup and Miles Weiss to compete for the men. In foil, Alina Lee and Dasha Myroniuk will compete in the women's event and Edriss Ndiaye and Justin Vogler were selected for the men's competition. Luca Fioretto will compete in saber.
Viveros is now a four-time NCAA qualifier and will be a three-time participant after the 2020 event was canceled. Ndiaye, Lee and Mazur will compete for the third year in a row, while Veltrup and Myroniuk will be two-time competitors. Weiss and Vogler, both juniors, will be making their first appearances, along with first-year Buckeye Luca Fioretto.
Veltrup was the runner-up last season to earn First Team All-America accolades. Viveros earned Second Team All-America honors in 2022 with a seventh-place finish and was a first team honoree in 2020. Myroniuk placed seventh last year to earn Second Team All-America honors. Mazur is a two-time honorable mention selection, finishing 11th in 2022 and 12th in 2023. Ndiaye (11th in 2023) and Lee (12th in 2022) have both earned Honorable Mention All-America laurels.
Ohio State won combined NCAA team titles in 2004, 2008 and 2012 and the men's national crown in 1942, along with 18 individual titles.
NCAA Championships Format
The NCAA Championships include individual events in each of six weapons, with 144 total competitors. Each region was allocated a certain number of spots and schools could qualify at most two per weapon, per gender.
At the championships, fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After round-robin, the Top 4 finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with winners fencing to determine first and second places and non-advancing fencers awarded a tie for third place. An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes during round-robin competition.
