
Buckeyes Among First 2024 B1G Weekly Award Winners

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State men's lacrosse players Connor Cmiel and Gannon Matthews have earned Big Ten weekly awards, the conference announced Tuesday. Cmiel is the Defensive Player of the Week and Matthews is the Offensive Player of the Week. Â

Cmiel was a key part in the Buckeyes' defensive effort that held Utah to just two goals in the second half, helping the Buckeyes come from behind to defeat Utah, 11-8. He tied for the team lead with a career high three caused turnovers in the game. The senior short stick defensive midfielder picked up four ground balls on the day.

Making his Buckeye debut in Saturday's season opener, Matthews led the team with six points and a career high five goals against Utah. His first Buckeye point was registered as an assist on the team's third goal and he went on to score the fourth, fifth and sixth goals to help Ohio State recover from a 2-6 deficit and tie the game at 6-6 in the third quarter. The Eagle, Idaho native scored the team's final two goals of a 9-2 scoring run to take the win over the Utes.

Ohio State hosts Cleveland State Saturday at Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium. The Buckeyes and Vikings face off at noon. The game will be streamed on B1G+ (subscription required).
