
Buckeyes Set Program Record, Win Silver in 800 Free Relay

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 13 Ohio State men's swimming and diving team set a school record and won a silver medal in the 800 free relay on the first day of the Big Ten Championships on Wednesday.
The relay team of Tomas Navikonis, Alex Metzler, Alex Axon and Tristan Jankovics wowed in the 800 free relay. After sitting in fourth through the first two legs, Metzler started to push the Buckeyes into third. As Jankovics jumped in for the anchor leg, he began to pick up speed, helping propel the Buckeyes to a second-place finish with an automatic NCAA qualifying, and program record, time of 6:12.39. The time is the ninth-fastest in the country this season.
The Buckeyes placed eighth in the 200 medley relay, with the team of Jean-Pierre Khouzam, Pete Krusinski, Chachi Gustafson and Daniel Baltes turning in a time of 1:24.95.
After the first day of competition, Ohio State is in fifth place with 100 points.
The Big Ten Championships continue Thursday through Saturday at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Tomorrow's events are the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 1-meter dive and 400 medley relay.
