MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Bruce Thornton scored 25 points and Jamison Battle added 21 but Ohio State fell at Minnesota on Thursday, 88-79, at Williams Arena.
The Buckeyes are now 15-12 overall, 5-11 in the Big Ten.
23 of Thornton's game-high 25 points came after halftime. Battle, a Minnesota transfer playing in The Barn for the first time as a visitor, connected on 5-of-10 three-point attempts.
The Buckeyes found themselves down early after a 12-2 blitz by the Golden Gophers in the opening minutes. Minnesota climbed out to a 22-9 lead before freshman Scotty Middleton's consecutive three-pointers charged the Buckeyes on a 14-4 run to cut the lead to three by the mid-point of the first half.
Battle would tie the game at 30 after his third three of the half but Minnesota finished on a 12-4run to hold a 42-34 edge at the break.
The Buckeyes had the lead down to seven with just over 10 minutes to play but an 8-0 run, keyed by a pair of three-pointers, shoved the Minnesota lead back out to 65-50. Ohio State kept pushing down the stretch but never really got within striking distance.
The Buckeyes will remain on the road and head to Michigan State on Sunday. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. and the game will be televised on CBS.
