Weekly highlight of the student-athletes behind the major moments in Ohio State Athletics
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Week in and week out, Buckeye student-athletes raise the standard of excellence set at Ohio State, whether that be in competition, in the classroom, or in the community. 'Buckeye Spotlight' recognizes student-athletes who had noteworthy accomplishments both in contests and beyond the box score.
Here are this week's Buckeye Spotlight student-athletes:
Robert Cash | Men's Tennis | 5th Year | New Albany, Ohio
- Robert Cash provided the clinching point in Ohio State's thrilling 4-3 win over No. 2 TCU to win the ITA Team Indoor National Championship
- Cash was a combined 6-2 on the weekend, including a perfect 4-0 in singles matches.
- The New Albany, Ohio native is now just 10 doubles wins shy of tying the program's career record.
Kirsten Eppele | Softball | Sr. | Strongsville, Ohio
- Despite having three games washed away due to rain, Eppele was a bright spot for a Buckeyes team that won the two games it was able to play before the inclement weather came to Orlando.
- In a 7-2 win over UC Riverside, Eppele went 2-for-4 with a career-high two home runs and four RBI.
- Her third-inning home run, a three-run blast, gave Ohio State to lead for good at 4-2. She added another home run in the seventh for the final run in the Buckeyes' 7-2 win, which was their sixth in a row.
- For the weekend, Eppele hit .500 (3-for-6) and had a .571 on-base percentage. She upped her season numbers to .350 with a team-high eight runs scored, five RBI and a .435 on-base percentage.
- The Buckeyes (6-1) return to action when they head west to Arizona this weekend for five games split between Arizona State and Grand Canyon. Action gets underway on Friday at ASU against Texas State and Arizona State.
Davis Burnside | Men's Hockey | Soph. | Scottsdale, Ariz.
- Burnside helped the Buckeyes to a sweep of then-No. 4-ranked Wisconsin over the weekend.
- The sophomore tallied both gamewinners for Ohio State vs. the Badgers.
- Friday, he scored with just 22 seconds left in overtime for a 3-2 come from behind win. Saturday his first-period goal stood as the winner in a 3-1 victory to complete the sweep.
- Burnside and the Buckeyes head to East Lansing to face No. 4 Michigan State for their last regular-season series this weekend.
Lilli Sherman | Women's Lacrosse | Jr. | Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
- Sherman was a leader on the Buckeye defense in two wins last week. She had five ground balls and three caused turnovers as the Buckeyes allowed just 12 goals and 39 shots in the two games combined.
- Friday at Youngstown State, Sherman and the Buckeyes posted a 17-9 win, holding the Penguins to just one first-half goal and nine first-half shots. Sherman had a career day Sunday at Akron, with five ground balls and three caused turnovers. She and the Buckeyes limited the Zips to three total goals, and just one after the first quarter, and to 15 total shots, with no more than six in a quarter.
- Sherman, who played five games in her first two years, has started all four games this season, with nine ground balls and six caused turnovers.
- She and the Buckeyes continue a stretch of road games when they play at No. 10 Denver Friday afternoon.
Jacy Sheldon | Women's Basketball | Gr. | Dublin, Ohio
- Graduate guard Jacy Sheldon led the Buckeyes to a convincing 80-47 win over RV/- Nebraska in OSU's lone game of the week. Sheldon had a game-high 23 points and tied her season-high six assists (also a game-high). She grabbed six rebounds and tied her season-high five triples (5-of-8, .625).
- Sheldon shot 9-of-15 (.600) from the floor in the win, leading the game among players with at least five field goal attempts, and broke into the top-10 in program history in career field goals made.
- Wednesday was her 10th game with 20+ points this season and 22nd in double figures. Sheldon leads the Buckeyes this season in scoring (17.8 ppg), assists (85) and steals (53).
Leah Bertrand | Women's Track & Field | Jr. | Point Fortin, Trinidad and Tobago
- Sprinter Leah Bertrand earned her third win in three meets in the 60m this season at the Arkansas Qualifier on Friday.
- The 60m program record holder ran a 7.40 in the finals to claim the title after finishing as the runner-up in the prelims. Her 60m time is tied for 13th in the country this season.
Kary Hollenbaugh | Women's Golf | So. | New Albany, Ohio
- Kary Hollenbaugh earned her first collegiate win, placing first at the Spartan Sun Coast Invitational at Palm Aire Champions Course in Sarasota, Fla.
- Hollenbaugh fired an eight-under 136 over two rounds of play to clinch the title and also helped the Buckeyes to the team title.
- Hollenbaugh shot a career-best 65 (-7) in the second round on Monday, which ties the third-lowest score in program history.
- Among the field of 81 players, Hollenbaugh averaged the best score on par fours (3.80) and par fives (4.38) and led in birdies with 12.
Hunter Shaw | Baseball | So. | Chelsea, Mich.
- Hunter Shaw was dominant in his debut for the Buckeyes in a 7-2 victory over BYU at the MLB Desert Invitational.
- Shaw tossed 4.0 innings out of the bullpen, earning his first career save.
- He fanned six batters in his appearance and only allowed one run on one hit. He did not give up any walks.
Jordan Baxter | Women's Hockey | Fr. | Coquitlum, B.C.
- Jordan Baxter tallied her first goals as a Buckeye in last weekend's sweep of St. Thomas.
- In Saturday's 12-1 win, she scored her first career goal and finished the day with her first multi-goal performance.
- She recorded the team's third and program record setting 12th goal of the game.
- Overall, Baxter's efforts helped the Buckeyes win the 2023-24 WCHA regular season title on home ice.
Tory Vetter | Women's Gymnastics | R-So. | Hilliard, Ohio
- Tory Vetter tied the program record all-around score with a 39.625 in the Buckeyes' win at Iowa last Friday.
- She recorded career bests on vault and uneven bars, scoring a 9.925 and 9.900, respectively.
- Vetter won the vault and beam titles and tied with teammate Nicole Riccardi on uneven bars.
