No. 6 Ohio State Earns Three Wins at 2024 Collegiate Duals

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 6 Ohio State (7-0) picked up three wins Saturday at the 2024 Collegiate Duals held at the Ensworth Frist Campus in Nashville.

In the first dual of the day, Ohio State defeated No. 21 North Carolina, 23-11. Graduate Carson Kharchla made his season debut and prevailed in his match at 174 over Joshua Ogunsanya (UNC), 10-3.

The Buckeyes opened the battle against the Tar Heels with a couple upset wins by redshirt freshman Vinny Kilkeary at 125 and by true freshman Ben Davino at 133. Kilkeary defeated No. 23 Spencer Moore in sudden victory (6-3) before Davino shut out No. 12 Ethan Oakley, 5-0.

Ohio State cruised to a 36-6 win in the middle dual against Lock Haven with six bonus-point victories.

The Buckeyes closed out the day with a 29-10 victory over No. 14 Iowa State to improve to 7-0 and finished 2024 undefeated in dual competition.

125-Vinny Kilkeary (OSU) def. No. 23 Spencer Moore (UNC) | D, 6-3 SV-1
Kilkeary took a 3-1 lead into the second period with a takedown and a Moore escape. Moore added another escape in the second and trailed 3-2 going into the final two minutes. The match went into sudden victory tied 3-all after Moore earned a point for riding time. Kilkeary then got the early takedown in overtime for a 6-3 win by decision.

133-Ben Davino (OSU) def. No. 12 Ethan Oakley (UNC) | D, 5-0
Davino scored a first-period takedown and added an escape early in the second to lead 4-0 after five minutes of action. Neither wrestler scored in the final period and with a point for riding time, Davino earned a 4-0 win by decision.

141-No. 2 Jesse Mendez (OSU.) def. Jayden Scott (UNC) | D, 5-0
There was no score after the first period. Mendez earned two minutes of riding time after Scott failed to escape from the down position in the second. Mendez escaped in the third for a 1-0 lead. He added a takedown with less than a minute left for a 4-0 advantage. With a point for riding time, Mendez earned the win by decision, 5-0.

149- No. 6 Lachlan McNeil (UNC) def. No. 12 Dylan D'Emilio (OSU) | D, 8-2
McNeil scored first with a takedown with a minute left in the first for a 3-0 lead. He added an escape in the second period to make it 4-0 Tar Heels. D'Emilio got on the board with an escape early in the third but McNeil added an escape to earn an 8-2 win by decision.

157-No. 7 Paddy Gallagher (OSU) def. Laird Root (UNC) | D, 6-2
Gallagher scored a takedown in the first to lead 3-1 after three minutes. Root earned a point for an escape early in the second period to end the period trailing Gallagher 3-2. From the down position, Gallagher scored a reversal for a 5-2 lead. He added a point for riding time to earn the win by decision, 6-2.

165- Brandon Cannon (OSU) def. Nicholas Fea (UNC) | TF, 22-6
Fea jumped to a 5-0 lead with a takedown and two-point nearfall before Cannon earned an escape and takedown to cut it to a 5-4 advantage. Cannon, who weighed in at 157 but moved up a weight to face Fea, escaped and got a takedown to take an 8-5 lead. After time for a Fea injury, Cannon chose down and escaped for a 9-5 lead. Cannon added another takedown for a 12-5 advantage. Starting neutral in the third, Cannon added seven points on a takedown and four-point near fall before earning the win ty technical fall, 22-6.

174-No. 15 Carson Kharchla (OSU) def. No. 16 Joshua Ogunsanya (UNC) | D, 10-3
Kharchla scored the first takedown of the match in his season debut. He added another takedown late in the second for a 6-2 lead going into the final two-minute period. An escape early made it 7-2 Buckeyes. Another takedown made it 10-2. Ogunsanya added an escape but Kharchla earned a 10-3 win by decision.

184- No. 18 Gavin Kane (UNC) def. Seth Shumate (OSU) | D, 6-3
After a scramble, Shumate scored the first points of the match with a takedown with under a minute left in the opening period. Leading 3-1, Shumate was not able to escape in the second. Kane, who built the riding time advantage in the second, escaped early in the third to make it 3-2 Shumate. Kane added a takedown for a 5-3 lead. With a point for riding time, Kane got the win by decision, 6-3.

197-Cade Lautt (UNC) def. Cayaen Smith (OSU) | TF, 20-5
Lautt headed to the second period with a 3-0 lead with a late first-period takedown. With an escape and takedown, Lautt improved his lead to 7-0. Smith escaped but Lautt added a takedown to head to the third leading 10-1. Smith added another escape but was penalized for stalling before another Lautt takedown made it 14-2. Smith added a point when Lautt was called for locked hands. Lautt then finished off the match for a win by technical fall, 20-5.

285- Hogan Swenski (OSU) def. Aydin Guttridge (UNC) | D, 4-1 SV-1
There was no score after the first three minutes. Guttridge took a 1-0 lead with an escape in the second. Swenski tied it at 1-all with an escape early in the third. The bout went to overtime tied at 1-all. Swenski then got the takedown to win it by decision, 4-1.

McCrone made short work of his bout with Lucas Fry by scoring at will in the opening period for a 16-0 win by technical fall.

Bouzakis scored first with a minute left in the opening period for a 3-0 lead. Noto added a late escape to head to the second with Ohio State leading 3-1. Bouzakis opened the second with a reversal before a Noto escape made it 5-2. An escape in the third put Bouzakis up 6-1 before Noto added a reversal before another Bouzakis escape made it 7-4. Noto added a takedown to tie it at 7-all but Bouzakis got the win after a takedown, a four-point near fall and a point for riding time for a win by major decision, 16-7.

Mendez scored first with a takedown before adding another to lead 6-2 after a couple Henson escapes. After another Mendez takedown, he went to the second leading 9-2. Mendez escaped early before adding a takedown for a 13-2 lead. Mendez added another four points on a near fall to win by technical fall, 17-2.

149- Gavin Brown (OSU) def. Nick Stonecheck (LHU) | TF, 20-4
Brown jumped to an 8-1 lead quickly in the first on a couple takedowns and two-point near fall. Two more takedowns made it 14-3 going to the second. Stonecheck escaped early before a Brown takedown made it 17-4 Buckeyes after five minutes. Brown then got the win by technical fall, 20-4.

Stampoulos struck first with a takedown before a Cannon escape made it 3-1 Lock Haven. Another Stampoulos takedown with a two-point near fall made it 8-1. Cannon then added an escape and a takedown to make it 8-5 Lock Haven. Cannon escaped in the second and took the lead on a takedown, 9-8. He then added a four-point near fall to up the advantage to 13-8. Cannon added another takedown in the third before getting the fall at 6:10.

After a scoreless first, Kunstek opened the second with an escape for a 1-0 lead. Herman added a takedown late in the second for a 3-1 advantage. Herman scored a reversal in the third for a 5-1 lead before a two-point near fall earned a win by decision, 7-1.

Kharchla quickly took a 3-0 lead on a takedown before adding two more for a 9-2 lead. The lead grew to 12-3 going to the second. Lledo escaped to open the second before a Kharchla takedown and two-point near fall made it 17-5. Kharchla then finished off the match with a takedown for a 20-5 win by technical fall.

184-Cole Bartram (LHU) def. Gavin Bell (OSU) | D, 7-6
An early takedown gave Bartram a 3-1 lead after a Bell escape. That score held going into the second. Bell opened with a two-point near fall to tie it at 3-all. Bartram earned an escape to go up 4-3 before a takedown upped the lead to 7-3. Bell closed the gap to 7-5 early in the third but Bartram held on for the win by decision, 7-6.

The first period ended without either wrestler scoring. Smith was called for stalling to give Hogan a 1-0 lead. Hogan doubled the lead (2-0) with an escape in the third. He added a takedown for a 5-1 advantage after a Smith escape. Hogan then finished off the match for a win by major decision, 10-1.

Swenski put the first points on the board with a takedown and two-point near fall for a 5-1 lead after a Miller escape.
