COLUMBUS, Ohio -- No. 1 seed and top-ranked Ohio State (16-2-4) fell behind early and could not recover in a 1-0 loss to No. 13 Marshall (14-1-7) in the second 2024 College Cup Semifinal Friday at WakeMed Soccer Park (10,614) in Cary, North Carolina.Â
Â

The second semifinal was delayed after the first was decided on penalty kicks after the match ended in double overtime tied 1-all. Vermont advanced to the national championship match Monday, 4-3 on PKs over Denver.
Â
How it Happened
Ohio State had the first significant offensive chance in the 7' when David Ajagbe headed a corner kick effort from Marko Borkovic off the crossbar.
Â
Marshall then quickly got downfield to score on a goal by Tarik Pannholzer after he got by Ohio State keeper Max Trejo at the top of the box to score into an open net off an assist from Thundering Herd goalkeeper Aleksa Janjic.
Â
Luciano Pechota had Ohio State's next best chance to get the equalizer when his shot in the 22' hit the left post resulting in a Marshall goal kick.
Â
Ohio State led in shots at the break, 10-6, with each team putting four attempts on frame.
Â
Ohio State trailed at the half for only the second time this season. In the season opener, Cleveland State scored first to lead 1-0 at the break before the Buckeyes scored late on a David Ajagbe goal to earn a 1-all draw.
Â
Opponents scored the first goal of the match against the Buckeyes for only the fourth time this season (2-1-1).
