The Basics
- The No. 13/12 Ohio State men's hockey team returns to Big Ten action with a two-game series at No. 4/3t Michigan State this weekend.Â
- The teams will meet at 7 p.m. Friday and 6 p.m. Saturday in Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing, Mich.
- The games will be streamed through B1G+ (subscription required), Ohio State Radio (1460 AM, Ohio State Buckeyes app and website) will carry both games and live stats will be available through OhioStateBuckeyes.com.
- Ohio State enters the series 7-0-1 after sweeping Lake Superior State last weekend. The Spartans are 5-1-0 and coming off an open weekend. The squad last played Oct. 25-26, sweeping Canisius on the road. The Buckeyes are 2-0-0 1-0-0 in the Big Ten, as they took five of six points at Wisconsin with 2-1 OT and 2-1 wins Oct. 18-19. MSU is opening its Big Ten slate this week.
- The Buckeyes and Spartans last met March 16 in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals, with Michigan State posting a 2-1 win at home. Ohio State was 1-3 vs. MSU in the regular season last year, splitting the series in East Lansing in February.
- Ohio State moved up in the national polls this week and is now No. 13 in the USCHO rankings and No. 12 in the USA Hockey/The Rink Live Top 20.
- The Buckeyes enter the weekend on a seven-game winning streak, the first time the team won seven games in a row since Jan. 12-Feb. 8, 2019.
- The series starts a stretch of three straight on the road for the Buckeyes. After playing two games at Lindenwood next weekend, Ohio State will have an open weekend before heading to Princeton Thanksgiving weekend for two games. The first half ends with home series vs. Penn State (Dec. 5-6) and Notre Dame (Dec. 13-14).
- The Buckeyes are sixth nationally in scoring offense (4.0 goals per game) and 10th in scoring defense (1.63 goals allowed per game).
- Sophomore forward Riley Thompson was named B1G Third Star of the Week after posting six points in the sweep of Lake Superior State.
- Graduate transfer Gunnarwolfe Fontaine hit the 100-point mark for his collegiate career against Bowling Green Oct. 26 and now has 104 in his 139-game collegiate career.Â
- Ohio State trails the all-time series with Michigan State, 57-98-13 and in East Lansing, the Spartans have the lead in the series, 52-23-7.Â
- Last season, the squads met in Columbus Nov. 3-4, 2023, when the Spartans posted 6-0 and 6-4 wins. In East Lansing Feb. 23-24, Ohio State took game one 6-2 but dropped the second, 5-2. In the Big Ten Tournament semifinals March 16, MSU posted a 2-1 win.Â
- In the B1G Tourney game, the teams were scoreless in the first and MSU opened the scoring 1:23 into the second. Buckeye Max Montes tied the score 2:03 into the third, but just 13 seconds later Michigan State went back ahead.
- Three Buckeyes - Kristoffer Eberly (Pinckney), Patrick Guzzo (Marysville) and John Larkin (Northville) - are natives of the state of Michigan. Â
