DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The No. 11/9 Ohio State women's basketball team (6-0) defeated Old Dominion (5-2) on Thursday by a 70-47 margin to open action at the Daytona Beach Classic.
Ohio State tied for the fewest points allowed in a first quarter in program history as it held a 10-4 lead after 10 minutes. The Buckeyes extended that lead to 34-14 at halftime after a 24-10 second quarter. Ohio State led by a 50-32 margin after 30 minutes and capped scoring at 70-47 after a 20-15 fourth quarter.
Taylor Thierry became the 39th player in program history to score 1,000 career points as she now has 1,001 points as a Buckeye. Ajae Petty was the first in the game to reach double figures, doing so early in the second quarter on her way to 24 total points. Petty added 11 rebounds for her first double-double as a Buckeye. Jaloni Cambridge had her fifth double-figure game with 15 points.
How it Happened
Petty opened scoring with the game's first two baskets and the Buckeyes held a 7-4 lead at the media timeout. The first quarter was a defensive battle and Ohio State held a 10-4 lead after 10 minutes, forcing 13 Old Dominion turnovers and recording six steals in the frame.
Petty scored the Buckeyes' first eight points of the second quarter as OSU held an 18-10 lead after four minutes of play. Ohio State used a 7-0 run to increase the lead to 23-10 just past the midway point of the quarter. Chance Gray wrapped up scoring before halftime and the Buckeyes had the 34-14 advantage going into the locker room.
In the third quarter, it was Petty again who opened scoring. A pair of free throws from Thierry gave the Buckeyes a 38-14 lead with seven minutes remaining in the quarter. Ohio State doubled up on Old Dominion, 42-21, at the media timeout. Neither team scored more than four-consecutive points down the stretch as the Buckeyes led by a 50-32 margin after 30 minutes.
Each team opened the fourth quarter with free throw attempts and Petty had the first Buckeye points of the quarter. Ohio State led by a 57-41 margin with 6:14 remaining. OSU used a 7-0 run midway through the quarter to lead 64-41 and capped scoring at 70-47 with a Monarch layup.
