COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2 Ohio State women's hockey team fell 4-1 to Minnesota State Saturday at Mayo Clinic HSEC in Mankato, Minn.
The Buckeyes (13-4-2, 8-4-2 WCHA) are back on the road to play Mercyhurst Monday, Dec. 2 for their final game of the calendar year. The teams face off in Erie, Pa. to conclude the home-and-home series.
Short Story
Minnesota State opened the scoring with a goal at 3:17 in the first period. The Buckeyes outshot the Mavericks, 7-2, in the opening frame, but faced a 1-0 deficit at the first intermission.
Both teams were scoreless in the second period as Ohio State goaltender Amanda Thiele made five saves, including a sliding save on the Minnesota State power play, in the frame. The Buckeyes sent eight shots on net in the period but were unable to find the equalizer.
After the Mavericks scored at 5:14 in the third for the 2-0 lead, Maddi Wheeler lit the lamp for the Buckeyes at 8:31 to cut the Minnesota State lead to one goal.
Following the Mavericks' third goal of the game, scored at 15:58 in the third, Ohio State pulled Thiele for the extra skater. The Buckeyes skated 6-on-5 for over two minutes but could not capitalize. Minnesota State scored on the empty net at 18:49 to take the 4-1 win.
