No. 15 Buckeyes Wrap Up Sweep of Lakers with 6-2 Win

Ohio State is now 7-0-1 on the year

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 15 Ohio State men's hockey team improved to 7-0-1 on the year with a 6-2 victory over Lake Superior State Saturday in Value City Arena. Ohio State led 1-0 after the first period and stretched the lead to 5-0 before the Lakers got on the board with eight seconds left in the second. LSSU (1-5-0) tallied early in the third but a Buckeye shorthanded empty net goal late closed out the win.

Riley Thompson led the Buckeyes with three assists and four points and Davis Burnside had a goal and two helpers for a three-point night. Jake Rozzi had two points, including his first career goal and assist, and Gunnarwolfe Fontaine had two helpers in the win.

How it Happened

Buckeye Ryan Gordon scored the lone goal of the first period at 2:31, tallying on a backhand from in front. Brent Johnson and Jake Rozzi assisted on the goal.
The Buckeyes put 14 shots on goal in the first, holding the Lakers to three.
Ohio State extended the lead to 4-0 with three goals in the first 3:27 of the second period. Davis Burnside scored on a 2-on-1 with Riley Thompson 35 seconds into the period, with Gunnarwolfe Fontaine also assisting.
At 2:06 Jake Rozzi notched his first collegiate goal, putting in a loose puck in front, assisted by Sam Deckhut.
Burnside recorded his second of the game at 3:27, scoring from the slot off a pass from Fontaine. Thompson had the second assist on the tally.
Defenseman William Smith recorded his first goal of the season at 10:51, converting on a wrist shot off a Burnside pass. Thompson picked up his third assist of the period on the goal.
The Lakers got on the board at 19:52 of the second when Carter Batchelder tallied and Timo Bakos scored 1:19 into the third for a 5-2 game.
Neither team scored the rest of the way until Thompson's shot from the Buckeye zone with Ohio State killing a penalty found the back of the Lakers' vacated net for the extra attacker at 18:58.
Shots were 10-5 in favor of Ohio State in the second and 8-7 with LSSU ahead in the third.
For the game, the Buckeyes outshot the Lakers, 31-16.
Kristoffer Eberly played the first two periods in goal for the Buckeyes and Logan Terness was in net in the third. Each goalie had seven saves on eight shots. LSSU's Rorke Applebee made 25 saves in 59:42.
Ohio State blocked 15 Laker shot attempts, led by Brent Johnson and Thompson with three each. Lake Superior State had 11 shot blocks.
Each team was 0-for-2 on the power play in the game.

Buckeye This and That

Thompson had six points in the two-game series, with a goal and five assists. He leads the Buckeyes with 10 points on the year, sharing the assist lead with seven. The three assists and four points were both a career best for Thompson. He had three points in an outing vs. Stonehill March 1 while skating for Alaska Anchorage and notched three two-assist games at UAA.
Burnside is on a three-game goal-scoring streak and four-game point streak (4g, 3a, 7p). It was his fifth career two-goal game and first since March 10 at Wisconsin. The outing was his first career three-point game after 11 two-point nights. He now has a 4-4-8 line on the year.
Fontaine had two points in each game vs. the Lakers and has a 1-5-6 line in his last four games combined.
Deckhut has a point in each of his last three games (2g, 3a, 5p).
Smith's goal was his first since Jan. 27 at Penn State.
Johnson is on a four-game point streak (1g, 3a).
Rozzi's assist in the first was his first collegiate point and he added his first collegiate goal in the second.
Ohio State is allowing 1.63 goals per game this season and has not allowed more than three in a game. The squad is averaging 4.0 goals per outing.
The Buckeyes held Lake Superior State to 17 shots in game one and 16 in game two.
