Ohio State Hosts 12th Annual Sync Cancer Swim-a-Thon

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State artistic swimming team hosted its annual Sync Cancer Swim-a-Thon on Sunday, Oct. 27 at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The event, in its 12th year and held in honor of former Buckeye Emily Marsh-Fleming's courageous battle with breast cancer, raises money for the Team Buckeye Peloton.

With a common goal to "sync" cancer, the Buckeyes were joined by friends, family and fans at McCorkle for their unique take on a peloton. Those in attendance swam laps and raised money for the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center.

This year, the team surpassed its $15,000 fundraising goal, with $18,628 raised so far this year, and had over 70 swimmers. Guest speakers included Molly Ranz-Calhoun, president and CEO of The Ohio State University Alumni Association, and Karl Koon, director of development and rider recruitment for Team Buckeye.Â

The event was created by Marsh-Fleming and Ohio State coaching staff to create a unique version of the Pelotonia bike challenge that she loved and participated in on multiple occasions. Before she lost her battle, Marsh-Fleming was excited to create an event that would pay it forward and continue to live on in support of the fight against all forms of cancer.

Since its inaugural year in 2013, Sync Cancer has blossomed into an incredible event and its goals have continued to grow incrementally with the unmatched support of current and former Buckeyes and families and friends of the program. In 12 years, the program has raised over $100,000Â for Team Buckeye and Pelotonia.

Marsh-Fleming was a member of the synchronized (artistic) swimming from 1994-97. A nine-time national event champion and four-time All-American, Marsh was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003and the United States Synchronized Swimming Hall of Fame in 2013.

Pelotonia directs 100 percent of every dollar raised by participants to cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, including the Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology.
