COLUMBUS, Ohio -- No. 7 Ohio State completed its wrestle-offs Thursday to help determine the lineup for the 2024-25 season.
Seven matches were contested starting with a bout at 133. No team scores were kept.
How it Happened
133 | Ben Davino (Fr./Gray) def. Andre Gonzales (R-Jr./Scarlet) | MD, 11-1
Davino scored first with a takedown for a 3-0 lead. Gonzales earned an escape to make it 3-1 at the end of the first period. From the down position, Davino upped his lead to 4-1 with an escape to start the second. He then added another takedown for a 7-1 advantage heading into the third. Davino added another takedown midway through the final period and with a point for riding time, won by major decision, 11-1.
141 | Jesse Mendez (Jr./Scarlet) def. Dakota King (Fr./Gray) | TF, 22-4.
Mendez, the defending Big Ten and NCAA Champion, scored first with a couple takedowns for a 6-2 lead after two King escapes. Mendez added two more takedowns to lead 12-3 after three minutes. With two more takedowns and a four-point nearfall, Mendez won by technical fall, 22-4.
157 | Gavin Brown (R-So./Scarlet) def. T.J. Schierl (R-Fr./Gray) | D, 7-3
Brown struck first with a takedown and after a Schierl escape, led 3-1 after the first period. Brown took a 4-1 lead in the third period. Schierl added an escape early in the final period to make it 4-2. Brown added a takedown for a 7-2 lead and finished off the match for a win by decision, 7-3.
165 | Bryce Hepner (R-Sr./Scarlet) def. e'Than Birden (Fr./Gray) | D, OT, 1-1 (criteria)
Neither wrestler was able to score in the opening period. Birden scored the first point of the match on an escape early in the second. That 1-0 lead held going into the third. Hepner tied it at 1-all with an escape in the third. The bout then went to sudden victory and remained tied 1-all headed into overtime. Birden chose bottom to start the first overtime but was not able to escape. Hepner then chose neutral in second overtime. Hepner earned the win on criteria.
184 | Ryder Rogotzke (So./Scarlet) def. Gavin Bell (R-Sr./Gray) | F, 2:56
Rogotzke put the first points on the board with a takedown. Bell then added an escape and a takedown for a 4-1 lead before a Rogotzke reversal and pin at 2:56.
197 | Luke Geog (R-So./Scarlet) def. Seth Shumate (R-So./Gray) | D, 4-2
There was no score after the first period. Geog got the first takedown and led 3-2 around two Shumate escapes in the second. Geog added an escape to start the third for a 4-2 lead and the win by decision, 4-2.
285 | Nick Feldman (R-So./Scarlet) def. Hogan Swenski (R-Jr./Gray) | TF, 19-3
Feldman led after the first period 9-2 with three takedowns. After an escape and two takedowns, Feldman led 16-3. Feldman then won by technical fall, 19-3.
