COLUMBUS, Ohio -- No. 6 Ohio State (1-0) opened the 2024-25 dual season Thursday at the Covelli Center with a 36-6 win over the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (0-2). The 2015 Ohio State National Championship Team was recognized at the break following the fifth match of the evening.Â
The dual was the first competition for graduate Sammy Sasso, a four-time All-American and two-time Big Ten champion, following injuries suffered during an off-campus incident in August of 2023. He won his match 12-6 in his return to action.Â
Sasso last competed at the 2023 NCAA Championships where he finished second at 149. He will compete this year at 165.Â
The Buckeyes will travel to take on Edinboro (2-0) at 1 p.m. Sunday in the first road dual of the seasonÂ
Mendez and Feldman will take part in the 2024 NWCA All Star Classic Saturday at Rec Hall in State College, Pennsylvania. No. 2 Mendez will face No. 3 Beau Bartlett (Penn State) while No. 3 Feldman will face No. 7 Taye Ghadiali of Campbell. Â

McCrone got the first takedown of the Ohio State dual season late in the first period for the 3-0 lead after three minutes. McCrone started the second period with a two-point near fall for a 5-0 lead. He then added a four-point near fall for a 9-0 advantage entering the final period. Starting neutral, McCrone added three more points with a quick takedown and then another four point near fall for a 16-0 win by technical fall. Â

 Mendez, the reining Big Ten and NCAA champion, started with a takedown and a 3-1 lead. Powe took the lead briefly with a takedown before Mendez tied it at 4-all with an escape. Mendez went up 7-4 with a takedown at the buzzer to end the first. He added another early in the second after a Powe escape to make it 10-5 Buckeyes. The Ohio State advantage increased to 13-6 with another Mendez takedown after a Powe escape. After a similar sequence and a four-point near fall, Mendez entered the third period leading 20-7.
