Weekly highlight of the student-athletes behind the major moments in Ohio State Athletics
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Week in and week out, Buckeye student-athletes raise the standard of excellence set at Ohio State, whether that be in competition, in the classroom or in the community. 'Buckeye Spotlight' recognizes student-athletes who had noteworthy accomplishments both in contests and beyond the box score.

- Abeln qualified for the United States Olympic Team in the 10-meter air pistol last weekend at the Olympic Trials in Anniston, Ala.
- This will be Abeln's first Olympic Games, which take place this summer in Paris, France.
- Abeln's road to Paris included five competitions and three finals over the last four months.
- She tied for third place in the 10-meter air pistol but won a spot on the team based on having more center shots.
- Battle made 11-of-19 three-point attempts over two games last week.
- He led the team with an average of 19.5 points per game to go along with 6.5 rebounds per game.
- Battle is leading the Big Ten in three-pointers made (47), three-pointers attempted (104) and three-point percentage (45.2).
- He is also trying to become the first player in program history to make five or more three-pointers in five consecutive games.
- Kaitlyn Grimes returned to Ohio State's lineup in the season opener at LSU after missing the 2023 season due to injury.
- In her return, she tied her career high on floor (9.800) and also competed on vault.
- Grimes and the Buckeyes went into a tough road environment and tied the program record season-opening score of 196.775.
- Ohio State's first home meet is set for this Sunday, Jan. 14 against Ball State and Towson.
- After a great four days on the links at Oceanside Country Club in Ormond Beach, Fla., Kary Hollenbaugh was crowned the champion of the 2024 South Atlantic Women's Amateur Championship ("The Sally").
- Hollenbaugh shot a nine-under 279 over four rounds of play and was the only player in the field to shoot under-par in all four rounds.
- She carded a 71 (-1) in each of the first two rounds, before two rounds in the 60s to close out the tournament. Hollenbaugh shot a 69 (-3) in the third round and was in first place going into Saturday's final round. She fired a four-under 68 in round four to cap her impressive week.
- Hollenbaugh's win at The Sally earns her a sponsor's exemption into an EPSON Tour event.
- Led the Buckeyes on the defensive end with nine blocks in wins over North Greenville and Daemen
- The No. 5 Buckeyes defeated NGU 3-0 and the Wildcats 3-1 to start the 2024 season
- Also added 10 kills in the win over Daemen to finish with 21.5 points in the season-opening victories
- The Buckeyes return to action at 7 p.m. Saturday against visiting UC San Diego at the Covelli Center
- Thiesing had four points, with a goal and an assist in each game, in the Buckeyes' sweep of Bowling Green last weekend.
- He extended his goal scoring streak to five and has a goal in seven of the last night outings.
- Friday in a 6-2 win his breakaway shot led to a shorthanded goal with less than a second left in the second period for a 4-1 Buckeye lead and he scored on the power play in the third.
- In a 4-2 victory
- Saturday his power play goal tied the game at one in the first period and he had the first assist on Patrick Guzzo's empty net goal that clinched the win.
- Thiesing and the Buckeyes, who are on a four-game unbeaten streak, return to Big Ten play this weekend with two home games vs. Notre Dame.
- Eboni Walker made the most of her first start of the season on Friday in a 90-60 win at Northwestern.
- Walker posted a season-high 11 points, tied her career-high six assists to lead all players and pulled down a game-high six rebounds. She had the best field goal percentage of those with at least five made field goals, making 5-of-7 (.714) from the floor, and did all of this in under 25 minutes on the court.
- This season, Walker is averaging 3.0 points and 3.1 rebounds in 12.5 minutes per game.
- Stepped in at 174 to win by technical fall and give Ohio State five critical team points against No. 8 Cornell
- The 20-4 victory helped the Buckeyes knock off the Big Red 21-20
- His win by decision in a dual vs. No. 2 NC State just before the New Year put Ohio State ahead in a 21-20 win vs. the Wolfpack
- Owns a 12-1 record in true-freshman season with a 3-0 record in duals
- Seven of his wins have been by bonus points with six technical falls and one pin
- The Buckeyes open Big Ten Conference action at 7 p.m. Friday at the Covelli Center against Illinois
