Weekly highlight of the student-athletes behind the major moments in Ohio State Athletics
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Week in and week out, Buckeye student-athletes raise the standard of excellence set at Ohio State, whether that be in competition, in the classroom, or in the community. Buckeye Spotlight recognizes student-athletes who had noteworthy accomplishments both in contests and beyond the box score.
Here are this week's Buckeye Spotlight student-athletes, the first edition for the 2024 calendar year:
Jacy Sheldon | Women's Basketball | Gr. | Dublin, Ohio
- Graduate guard Jacy Sheldon led the Buckeyes over the holidays with 22.7 points per game, nine three-pointers and eight assists, as well as a pair of 30-point performances. She's the first Buckeye since Taylor Mikesell last fall to record 25+ points in back-to-back games and has three 30-point games in the last five after four in her career prior to this season.
- Sheldon began the stretch with 30 points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal against No. 2/2 UCLA, also making a trio of three-pointers. Against Belmont, Sheldon tied her season-high 31 points, shooting 12-of-18 (.667) from the field and 5-of-9 (.556) from behind the arc. Her five triples were a season-high for her and she added three assists, two steals and two rebounds to her stat line.
- This season, Sheldon leads Ohio State with 18.2 points/game and is shooting 54.7 percent from the floor and 40.7 percent from three.
Caden Brown | Men's Hockey | Jr. | Chesterfield, Mo.
- In the Buckeyes' return to game action following their winter break, Brown led the squad with two points in its win over Mercyhurst. He was one of 12 Buckeyes with a point in the victory.
- Brown put the Buckeyes in the lead with a power play goal in the first period and assisted on Cam Thiesing's eventual gamewinning goal in the second.
- The junior transfer missed the first eight games of the season after suffering an injury early in preseason practice. He has eight points, with three goals and five assists, in his first 10 games in the Scarlet and Gray.
- Brown and the Buckeyes take on Bowling Green in a home-and-home series this weekend, with game one Friday in Columbus.
Brendan McCrone | Wrestling | R-Fr. | Willoughby, Ohio
- Helped the Buckeyes to a title at the 2023 Collegiate Duals in Nashville on Dec. 19
- Pinned No. 1-ranked Jakob Camacho in the opening bout vs. No. 2 North Carolina State in title match (W, 21-20)
- Opened event for Ohio State with a 10-8 win by decision over Trever Anderson of No. 21 Northern Iowa
- Has two wins over Top 5 foes at 125-pounds this year
Jack Sawyer | Football | Jr. | Pickerington, Ohio
- Sawyer, a defensive end, tied the Ohio State bowl record for sacks in a game with three last Friday vs. Missouri in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.
- Sawyer finished the game with four tackles, three tackles-for-loss and three sacks.
- Over the final five games of the season, Sawyer had a team-best eight tackles-for-loss, five sacks and three quarterback hurries.
- He finished the season as Ohio State's team leader in sacks (6.5) and tied for the team lead in tackles-for-loss (10.0 for minus 46 yards).
- With Sawyer's help, the Buckeyes finished the season ranked No. 2 nationally in scoring defense (11.2 points allowed/game). It's the lowest average allowed in 27 seasons, since the 1996 team gave up just 10.9 points/game.
