Buckeyes Earn First Big Ten Win in Sunday Sweep at Iowa

This is Ohio State’s third sweep of the season and caps the opening weekend of conference play.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 21 Ohio State Buckeyes (4-7, 1-1 B1G) capped the opening weekend of Big Ten play at Iowa (8-6, 0-2 B1G) with a sweep (25-22, 26-24, 25-14). Â

The Buckeyes overcame a late four-point deficit by scoring the final six points in the first set to earn a 25-22 set win. Ohio State won a close second set by scoring the final three points to take a 26-24 set win. The Buckeyes completed the sweep by leading start to finish in a 25-14 win in the third set.

Emily Londot reached 10 kills in the second set, her 10th match this season with 10+ kills, and finished with a match-high 16 kills. Sydney Taylor took part in the hitting duties with a career-high four kills and added 11 digs, her fifth match of the season with at least 10. Eloise Brandewie finished with a career-high five blocks. Kaitlyn Hoffman recorded 10+ digs for the fourth time this season, finishing with 13 digs this afternoon.

How it Happened
Iowa scored first to open the match, but the next four points belonged to Ohio State. The Hawkeyes worked to tie the set at seven and used a 3-0 run to take an 11-9 lead and force a Buckeye timeout. OSU scored three of the next four points to tie the set at 12, the fifth tie of the set. After tying the set at 14, Iowa went on a 4-0 run to take an 18-14 lead. The teams traded points before OSU used an extended 5-2 run to get within one at 22-21, prompting an Iowa timeout. The Buckeyes tied the set at 22 out of the timeout. A successful challenge capped the OSU 6-0 run to finish the first set with a 25-22 win.

The score was tied at points six through 14 with each team gaining the lead at times. A 3-0 Iowa run forced Ohio State to call timeout trailing 17-14. The Buckeyes scored the next three points to tie the set at 17 and prompt a Hawkeye timeout. Back-to-back aces from Sarah Sue Morbitzer force another Iowa timeout as OSU was on a 5-0 run and leading 19-17. The Hawkeyes responded with a 3-0 run to take a 20-19 lead. The teams then traded points before the Buckeyes called timeout trailing 24-23. Ohio State scored the final three points in the set to earn a 26-24 set win.
