No. 12 Ohio State Falls Just Short Against No. 3 Northwestern

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 12 Ohio State Buckeyes (8-2, 2-1 B1G) fell just short against No. 3 Northwestern (8-1, 2-0 B1G) on Friday afternoon at Buckeye Varsity Field.
The Short Story
Ohio State led 1-0 after the first quarter following an early goal from Julie Rodijk. Northwestern tied the game at one with a nifty pass before Makenna Webster's penalty stroke gave the Buckeyes a 2-1 lead at halftime.
The game was knotted at two goals apiece heading into the final quarter after a Wildcats penalty stroke goal tied the game in the third. After Ohio State had a goal called off, Northwestern took its first lead of the game with nine minutes to play. The Wildcats increased their lead to 4-2 with a goal on the empty cage before Webster's second penalty stroke goal capped scoring with the Buckeyes falling 4-3.
How The Goals Were Scored
- Julie Rodijk opened scoring in the third minute of play with her fifth goal of the season, capitalizing on a pass from Hallie Brost off the rebound.
- Northwestern evened the score at one in the second quarter by working around the Buckeye goalkeeper following a pass from the top of the circle.
- With 1:20 left in the first half, Makenna Webster earned and converted on a penalty stroke attempt for her 11th goal of the season.
- The Wildcats tied the game at two with a penalty stroke goal six minutes into the third quarter.
- Northwestern took its first lead of the game with just over nine minutes remaining, working through a tight space within the circle.
- The Wildcats took advantage of the Buckeyes pulling their goalkeeper to take a 4-2 lead with just under two minutes to play.
- Webster scored on her second penalty stroke of the game with 30 seconds remaining.
Buckeye This and That
- Ohio State is now 5-1 at home on the season. They have four regular season games remaining at Buckeye Varsity Field: vs. Ohio (Sept. 24), Rutgers (Oct. 13), Maryland (Oct. 15) and Bellarmine (Oct. 22).
- Makenna Webster has at least one point in eight of Ohio State's 10 games this season.
- Fifth-year senior Delaney Lawler played in her 80th career game on Friday. She joins 10 others players who have reached that mark in their respective careers, most recently Emma Goldean, who played in a school-record 90 games from 2018-2022.
- Teammate Leanne Bough will join that group soon, as she reached 78 career games played on Friday. Bough is also Ohio State's active career leader with 44 points (19 goals, six assists).
- The Buckeyes entered Friday's game averaging 3.78 goals per game, which is ahead of the pace set by the 2006 team that currently has the single-season goal average record (3.47). That team finished with 66 goals scored in 19 games.
