Julie Rodijk and Makenna Webster score second-half goals in the win
COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 12 Ohio State got itself back in the win column on Sunday afternoon thanks to a second-half rally that saw the Buckeyes score the final two goals of the game in a 3-2 victory over in-state foe Ohio. Ohio State improves to 9-2 on the season while the Bobcats fall to 3-4.
The Short Story
Trailing 2-1 in the third quarter, Ohio State responded with goals by Julie Rodijk and Makenna Webster to take back control of the game. From there, the Ohio State defense did the rest, holding Ohio to zero shots in the fourth quarter to secure the Buckeyes' ninth win of the season.
Fifth-year senior Leanne Bough had the game's first goal on the penalty corner. Ohio scored twice in a one-minute span early in the third quarter to take the lead for the first time on the day, but that advantage was short-lived thanks to Rodijk and Webster.
How The Goals Were Scored
- Bough opened the scoring 3:21 into the game when she finished on a well-executed penalty corner. Delaney Lawler and Webster were credited with assists on the play. It was Bough's fourth goal of the season and the 17th of her career.
- The score remained 1-0 through halftime, but early in the third quarter Ohio found the back of the cage twice thanks to the work of Katelyn Whittle.
- Whittle twice scored on scrambles in front of the goal 44 seconds apart. The second gave OU its first lead of the day at 2-1 with just over 10 minutes remaining in the third quarter.
- Rodijk, Claudia Thomas and Hallie Brost were the penalty corner combo that worked together on the game-tying goal five minutes after Ohio took the lead. For Rodijk, it was her sixth goal of the season, which ties her with Brenna Bough for second-most on the team.
- Webster's nifty goal came when she took a pass from Anne Marie Krebs, dribbled around the goalie and created a shot from in close. The score put Ohio State ahead 3-2 2:06 into the fourth quarter.
Buckeye This and That
- Ohio State is now 6-1 at home on the season. They have three regular season games remaining at Buckeye Varsity Field: vs. Rutgers (Oct. 13), Maryland (Oct. 15) and Bellarmine (Oct. 22).
- Makenna Webster has at least one point in nine of Ohio State's 11 games this season. She also leads the team with six game-winning tallies.
- The Ohio State defense held Ohio without a shot in both the first and fourth quarters. Goalie Abby Danson finished with three saves.
- Ohio State, which entered the weekend with the nation's sixth-highest goals-per-game average nationally, has scored three or more times in eight of 11 games.
- Rodijk finished the weekend with a goal in each of Ohio State's games. Additionally, Webster added to her team-leading points total and now has 32 on the season. She had seven this weekend: four points Friday vs. Northwestern and three today.
