Weekly highlight of the student-athletes behind the major moments in Ohio State Athletics
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Week in and week out, Buckeye student-athletes raise the standard of excellence set at Ohio State, whether that be in competition, in the classroom or in the community. 'Buckeye Spotlight' recognizes student-athletes who had noteworthy accomplishments both in contests and beyond the box score.
Akanksha Bhan | Women's Tennis | Grad. | Gujarat, India- Bhan led the Buckeyes with a 3-0 record last weekend as they opened their fall slate at the Furman Fall Classic.
- Two of her three wins were in straight sets, as she captured the flight nine title.
- The graduate student and ITA Scholar-Athlete started the year ranked nationally in doubles with Irina Cantos Siemers.
Zella Bailey | Field Hockey | So. | Virginia Beach, Va.
- Bailey had a big weekend for Ohio State as it opened conference play with back-to-back wins over Michigan and Michigan State.
- Bailey scored in the third quarter against the Wolverines to put Ohio State ahead 4-0. The Buckeyes would go on to win 5-1, their first victory over Michigan in 12 years.
- On Sunday, Bailey tallied the game-winning goal in overtime at Michigan State. The win improved Ohio State's overall record to 8-1, which marks the Buckeyes' best nine-game start in 17 years.
- Ohio State, which rose to No. 12 in this week's NFHCA poll, hosts No. 3 Northwestern on Friday (3 p.m.) and Ohio on Sunday (1 p.m.).
Kary Hollenbaugh | Women's Golf | So. | New Albany, Ohio
- Kary Hollenbaugh was the top finisher for the Buckeyes at the Mary Fossum Invitational this week, tying for fourth place.
- Hollenbaugh carded rounds of 71 (-1), 72 (E) and 73 (+1) to finish with a 54-hole score of 216 (E).
- Hollenbaugh, who was named a Big Ten Player to Watch, helped the Buckeyes to a third-place team finish.
Marcus Hudgins | Men's Lacrosse | Sr. | Syracuse, N.Y.
- Marcus Hudgins was selected to the San Diego Seals in Saturday's NLL Entry Draft.
- Hudgins, who was the eighth pick of the fifth round, started all 14 games of the Buckeyes' 2023 campaign. He led the team in caused turnovers (17) and ranked third on the team among non-faceoff players in ground balls (27).
- Hudgins is the 18th Buckeye drafted to the NLL and is the program's 12th in the last six years.
Sophia Louder | Women's Soccer | So. | Liberty Township, Ohio
- Sophia scored her first collegiate goal in the Buckeyes' 1-1 draw at Michigan State on Sunday.
- She headed-home a perfectly placed corner kick by Kine Flotre in the 63rd minute to pull the Buckeyes even and they would hold on for a big road point in the opening match of the Big Ten season.
- The goal was extra special for Louder as it came on her birthday.
Lauren Murphy | Women's Volleyball | Fr. | Round Rock, Texas
- Freshman outside Lauren Murphy put together her best week of the season this past week at No. 6 Texas and No. 18 Baylor. Murphy averaged 2.00 kills/set, 1.56 digs/set and 0.33 blocks/set, totaling 22.5 points through nine sets. Murphy led the team with three aces (continuing her streak to three-consecutive matches) and ranked second in kills and points.
- Against Texas, Murphy totaled a then career-high seven kills and three digs, adding two blocks. Then next day against Baylor, Murphy recorded her first collegiate double-double with career-highs in kills (11), digs (11), aces (2) and hit percentage (.333).
