Ohio State stays perfect at home; freshman Brenna Bough scores two goals
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 17 Ohio State Buckeyes (7-1) made a major statement in their 2023 Big Ten opener, beating No. 8 Michigan (4-3) on Friday afternoon by a 5-1 score at Buckeye Varsity Field. It was the Buckeyes' first win over Michigan in 12 years, since September of 2011.
The Short Story

Bough opened the second half with her second goal of the game less than one minute into the third quarter. Zella Bailey scored next for Ohio State before Michigan got onto the scoreboard. - Bough tapped in a pass from Julie Rodijk within the first minute of the second half for her second goal of the game.
- Zella Bailey increased the Buckeyes' lead to 4-0 with a redirect off a penalty corner opportunity with the assist coming from Sarah Richards. This is Bailey's second goal of the season.
- Michigan got onto the board less than one minute after Ohio State's fourth goal by capitalizing on a rebound.
- Rodijk responded with her fourth goal of the season less than one minute following the Wolverines' goal on a direct penalty corner feed from Claudia Thomas and Webster.

- Leanne Bough, also a fifth-year senior, isn't far behind with 75 career games played. She entered the day as Ohio State's active career leader in points (43).
- Ohio State is a perfect 5-0 at home this season. The Buckeyes are at Buckeye Varsity Field twice more in the month of September, with both games coming next weekend: Friday, Sept. 22 vs. Northwestern and Sunday, Sept. 24 vs. Ohio.
- This is the fourth time this season that the Buckeyes have totaled at least five goals. Ohio State is averaging 4.00 goals per game and 18.2 shots/game.
- Today was Brenna Bough's third multi-goal game in the last four games. She is currently second on the team with 14 points (six goals, two assists).
- Makenna Webster has at least one point in six of the seven games that she's played in. Her nine goals, five assists and 23 points are all team highs.
What They Said
Head Coach Jarred Martin
"I told [the team] that you can't avoid what happens – win or loss – everyone knows the history. We know the rivalry and we can think about that but when the game starts, we need to make sure we're prepared for that."
"First quarter, you could feel the energy but our defense was quick to pass to offense. As much as I liked that part of it, to see that for four quarters – I thought that was great. You know there is going to be some response from that opponent. I was happy for the start, but also to see that the whole game."
"I want them to feel happy to be a part of this rivalry. For our fifth-years, I'm really proud of them. They were supposed to step off at the end and I felt like they can stay on the field and enjoy this."
What's Next
Big Ten play continues this weekend with Ohio State's first conference road test, which awaits in East Lansing, Mich. against Michigan State on Sunday. Game time is set for noon.
