On how he's approaching each day
“I’m surrounded by elite people and elite coaches. Every day is an opportunity to learn something new and that’s definitely how I have felt from the jump.”
On Xavier Johnson being awarded the Block O jersey and being named a captain
“Couldn’t think of a better person for that award. I know he’s made an impact in our room and he impacts those on special teams. You can’t say enough about the gentleman with how he impacts others. Very proud to have him in our room.”
On the development of freshman Carnell Tate
“Carnell has done a great job. As a football player he’s very mature and when you give that tag to a football player it says a lot. His ability to take meetings to the field, correct mistakes in one try and hold himself accountable to his mistakes all shows a lot of intentional work and is very important. It’s also typically an older guy thing. I’m very proud of him, he’s put himself in a position to play meaningful reps.”
On senior Julian Fleming
“His growth as a leader has been substantial. It tells you a lot about the young man as he grows as a person and what he’s like on and off the field. His football mechanics also continue to increase… I’m really excited for him to have a great year.”

On freshman teammate Carnell Tate
“Carnell’s going to be special man. Carnell is a better point than I was heading into last year. He’s amazing. He handles his business, is always in the right spot, catches the ball and I think he could be one of the best receivers to ever come out of Ohio State.”
On why Ohio State receivers are so polished
“It’s not like that everywhere in the country. I think you have to give coach Hartline a lot of credit for recruiting the right people.”
On if they will pick up where they left off at the end of last season
"I think even in the loss we realized that from an offensive standpoints there were some bright spots there. Obviously we lost so it wasn’t perfect, but we learned a lot from that game and how we can factor that into this season. We’re going to take that same aggressive approach headed into this year.”

On how his leadership has developed
“I felt my first two years I couldn’t develop much as a leader because of injuries and not being able to contribute the way I wanted to. However in the past two years I’ve been starting to grow into that leadership role.”
On what he focused on this off-season
“The thing I really focused on was my health. Just constantly taking care of my body the best I can. Coming in and getting extra treatment, getting in all the extra work I can to stay healthy and constantly be able to be available.”
On working with quarterbacks Kyle McCord and Devin Brown
“I think they’re both really really good quarterbacks. They both excel at different things and honestly both can be first round draft picks in the future if they continue to work the right way. ”

On Carnell Tate’s adjustment to college play
“He’s really consistent. He’s handled coming into a new offense and a higher level of play with grace… I think Marv and I did a pretty good job of taking accountability of learning the playbook but Carnell has done it at such a high level.”
On the battle surrounding the starting quarterback position
“The confidence that I have in them is going to come with experience... We’re excited to just play and get more experience with them, whoever is named the starter at the end of the day. But we’re 100% confidence in both of those guys.”
“At the end of the day we’re just going to grind. We’re going to work as hard as we can and study our plays. We’re going to treat every opponent with respect and come out with our hair on fire. Then at the end of the year we’ll look up and see where we’re at.”
