COLUMBUS, Ohio – Neal Shipley used his great playing at the NCAA Championship at the end of May as a springboard into a tremendous summer. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native posted five Top-15 finishes, including three runner-up finishes, and finished fourth in the final Elite Amateur Series standings.
Created to challenge the best of the best in amateur golf, the Elite Amateur Golf Series brings together the top amateur championships in a collective series of competitions. It maintains a proven track record that prepares elite players for the toughest competitive tests, making the championships the majors of amateur golf.
With his fourth-place finish, Shipley earned a to be determined start in an upcoming Korn Ferry Tour event as well as a spot in final qualifying for next summer's US Open.
Shipley joined the Buckeye program at the start of last summer when he was ranked 1497 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. He has since risen to as high at 118 this summer. Shipley played in every event in his first season as a Buckeye this past year and earned honorable mention All-America honors. He was second on the team in scoring at 72.72 and posted five Top 20 finishes.
He opened this summer by finishing runner-up at the Dogwood Invitational in early June. He posted 20 birdies and an eagle on the week around the Druid Hills Club Golf in Atlanta. He was 15-under par overall.
A week later, playing near home at the Sunnehanna Amateur in Johnstown, Pa., Shipley finished runner-up again, posting rounds of 68-68-66-66 to finish at 12-under par and just one shot off the pace. He made 21 birdies over the four rounds.
After taking a couple of weeks off, he got right back into contention at the Trans-Miss Championship at Brook Hollow Golf Club in Dallas, Texas in mid-July. He made 19 more birdies and a pair of eagles to, once again, finish at 12-under par. He birdied the 72nd hole to get into a playoff but would fall on the first extra hole, giving him his third runner-up finish of the summer.
At the Southern Amateur at the Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn., he opened with a 1-over 73 before posting a pair of 3-under 69s over the final two rounds to finish in 14th place. His 69 in the final round was tied for the fourth lowest of the day as it jumped him 24 spots in the final standings.
He then traveled to West Vancouver, B.C., for the 56th Pacific Coast Amateur at the end of July. Shipley remained hot as he again carded four rounds in the 60s (69-67-67-66) and posted 19 birdies en route to his fourth Top-3 finish of the summer.
The coast-to-coast travel may have caught up with him at the final event, the Western Amateur, where he would miss the stroke play cut. But that only dropped him one spot in the standings, and he remained in the Top 5.
Shipley will be one of four Buckeyes competing in the US Amateur next week at Cherry Hills Country Club in Colorado. He is joined by Maxwell Moldovan, Joe Wilson IV and Jacob Tarkany.
