COLUMBUS, Ohio – A change in venue couldn't slow No. 3 Ohio State as the Buckeyes were dominant in a 4-0 victory over Louisville in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Rain on Sunday forced the match to move inside the Ty Tucker Tennis Center, where the Buckeyes are now 17-0 on the season.
With the win, Ohio State has advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament for the 17th consecutive season and will host No. 14 seed Arizona next Saturday. The Buckeyes are 31-2 on the season.
Ohio State jumped out quick on all three courts in doubles and quickly collected wins on courts two and three to secure that point. The momentum continued into singles as the effects of a long, emotional match yesterday looking to be taking a toll on Louisville. The Buckeyes won all six first sets and rolled to another win.
Sunday was a special day for a number of reasons. In addition to moving on in the NCAA Tournament, James Trotter and Cannon Kingsley both received their degrees as part of graduation Sunday. It was also director of tennis Ty Tucker's birthday!
Doubles
- Kingsley and Tracy have been playing great lately and Sunday was no exception. The Buckeye duo raced to a quick 3-0 lead and would take the match 6-1. They are now 17-4 on the season.
- On court two, Lutschaunig and Trotter grabbed the first break of the match at 3-1 and rode that lead to a 6-2 victory to clinch the doubles point. The Buckeyes rebounded after losing their match in round one and are 12-7 on the year.
- Cash and Boulais also took the first break to lead 3-1 on court one and were leading 4-3 when the match was halted.
Singles
- Ohio State won all six first sets at 6-3 or better. The Buckeyes would get wins on courts 3, 4 and 5 to finish the match 4-0.
- Alexander Bernard claimed his second singles win of the weekend, overwhelming Andre Steinbach 6-0, 6-2 on court four. That was the freshman's 20th win of the season.
- James Trotter remained perfect on the season as he cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Matthew Fung on court four. He's now 26-0 on the season in singles matches.
- JJ Tracy provided the clinching point on court three as he beat No. 73 Fabien Salle 6-2, 6-3.
- Justin Boulais was close to winning as he was on control over No. 45 Etienne Donnet on court one 6-1, 5-4.
- Cannon Kingsley was also well on his way to a victory, leading 5-2 in the second set after winning the first 6-2. Jack Anthrop won his opening set 6-2 and was up a break at 4-3 in the second when the match was halted.
