COLUMBUS, Ohio – On the second day of racing at the 2023 NCAA Championship regatta Saturday morning, the Ohio State rowing team advanced two boats to the petite finals and a third to the C final. The Second Varsity Eight and First Varsity Four will race for seventh through 12th place and the First Varsity Eight will race for as high as 13th place at the national championship meet.
In the Buckeyes' first race of the day, the 1V8 won its C/D semifinal heat in 6:24.397 to advance to Sunday's C final. It was the Rutgers boat that took the early lead in the race, crossing the 500 and 1000m mark first. Ohio State was in second place, just a half second behind the Scarlet Knights at the halfway point and made its move to push ahead at the 1500m mark. Ohio State and Rutgers were stroke-for-stroke in the final 500m with the Buckeyes crossing the finish line first, .692 second ahead of the Scarlet Knights. Both boats finished with open water ahead of third-place Northeastern.
The Buckeyes will race Duke, Indiana, Northeastern, Rutgers and Southern California in their finals heat scheduled for 9:12 a.m.
In the first heat of the 2V8 A/B semifinals, Yale, California and Stanford pulled ahead early as the top-three boats. Ohio State and Michigan battled for the fourth-place spot with the Buckeyes holding the advantage through the first 1500m. The Wolverines were able to pull ahead in the final 500m and Ohio State took fifth in a time of 6:26.83.
The Buckeyes will race in Sunday's petite final set for 9:48 a.m. against Brown, Michigan, Pennsylvania, SMU and Virginia.
Ohio State's First Varsity Four raced in the first A/B semifinal heat of the boat class, finishing fifth in a time of 7:16.750. Yale, Stanford and Brown advanced from the heat to the grand final.
The Buckeyes' boat will race against California, Duke, Michigan, SMU and Washington in the petite final at 9:24 a.m.
Thompson Wins NCAA Elite 90 Award | Online Release
2023 Ohio State graduate Tess Thompson received the Elite 90 Award following the first day of competition at the NCAA Championships. Thompson, the first Ohio State rower and ninth Ohio State student-athlete to win the award, boasts a 4.0 grade-point average and earned degrees in sport industry and human development and family science earlier this month. The award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's 90 championships.
