
Bertrand’s Program Record Leads Strong Saturday at the Big Ten Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State track and field team continued action at the 2023 Big Ten outdoor track & field championships in Bloomington, Ind. on Saturday. The Buckeye women are tied for sixth with 19 points, while the Buckeye men are tied for eighth with 21 points.
Leah Bertrand broke the program record in the 100m prelims (11.08), also running the fastest qualifying time. Yanique Dayle was second in the 100m prelims, winning her heat with a personal-best time of 11.17 to tie for third in program history.
BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS (FINALS)
- High jump: The Buckeye men got points from two individuals as Shaun Miller Jr. finished third (2.17m / 7’1.5”) and Reign Winston was seventh (2.08m / 6’9.75”).
- Shot put: Hayden Tobias finished fifth to earn points for the Buckeye men with a season-best throw of 19.82m / 65’0.5”. Josh Miller (17.71m / 58’1.25”) and Adam Riedinger (17.32m / 56’10”) also earned marks. On the women’s side, Faith Bender (15.39m / 50’6”) and Lacey Stringer (15.10m / 49’6.5”) both competed.
- Long jump: Jaimie Robinson finished sixth with a personal-best mark of 6.04m / 19’9.75”, while Atinuke Shittu also posted a PR (5.76m / 18’10.75”).
- 3000m steeplechase: Nathaniel Tamminga (9:11.67) and Sean Carney (9:16.32) both competed in the event for the Buckeye men.
DECATHLON
- Results: Leo Uusimaki finished fifth in the decathlon with 7,365 points.
- Pole vault: Leo Uusimaki won the pole vault portion of the decathlon by clearing 5.10m / 16’8.75”.
- 110m hurdles: He won his heat and finished second overall with a personal-best time of 14.39.
- 1500m: Uusimaki finished seventh in the 1500m (4:47.81) to wrap up the decathlon.
- Javelin: He finished eighth with a best mark of 47.60m / 156’2”.
- Discus: Uusimaki earned his second PR of the day with a best throw of 35.52m / 116’6” to finish ninth.
BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS (PRELIMS)
- 400m: All three Buckeye women won their respective heats to earn automatic qualifiers to tomorrow’s final. Bryannia Murphy finished with the fastest time of the qualifiers (52.08), while Alyssa Marsh’s time (52.44) was third overall and Jaydan Wood’s time (52.86) tied for fifth. On the men’s side, Antonio Hanson (46.82) and Zidane Brown (46.82) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, to advance to Sunday’s final. Kashawn Baptiste ran a personal-best 47.55.
- 100m: The Buckeye women had four qualify for the 100m finals, with Nya Bussey (11.32) and Columba Effiong (11.45) finishing fifth and seventh overall and Bussey winning her heat. Trey Gardette (10.67) led the Buckeye men in the prelims, while Adrian Curry also competed.
- 110m hurdles: Oscar Smith’s season-best 13.82 was good for seventh overall and earned him a spot in the final.
- 800m: Alex Kenish ran a personal-best 1:48.79 to finish fourth on the men’s side. Carina Napoleon led the Buckeye women with a personal-best time of 2:10.97 with Amelia Figler (2:18.15) also competing.
