COLUMBUS, Ohio – Winning a championship is tough. Defending a championship tough. Winning 17 consecutive championships is ridiculous.
Ohio State men’s tennis has been one of the top programs in the country for the better part of the last 20 years and on Sunday, the team wrapped up its 17th consecutive Big Ten title. The Buckeyes have hoisted the trophy every year since 2006. Who remembers where they were in 2006
Director of Tennis Ty Tucker took over the program in 2000 and has lifted the program to national prominence. He has been the maestro of this run and it doesn’t look to be slowing anytime soon.
Below are notes on 17 consecutive titles:
- The 17th consecutive title breaks a tie with Michigan for the longest consecutive title streak in men’s tennis. It’s always good when one-upping that school up North.
- The consecutive streak is the second-longest in any sport in Big Ten history, trailing just Iowa wrestling’s streak of 25 consecutive titles from 1974-98.
- The Buckeyes’ Big Ten record during the streak is a laughable 179-2! That’s right, 179-2.
- Ohio State has also followed the regular season title with a Big Ten Tournament title 12 times during this run
- The Buckeyes’ overall record since 2006 is 549-59. That’s an average of over 30 wins per season, which included the 14-win COVID season
- At home, the Buckeyes have basically been unbeatable. Including all opponents and not just Big Ten opponents, the Buckeyes are 305-2 at home since the streak of the title streak in 2006.
In case you can’t remember back to 2006, here are a couple of refreshers:
- Facebook became open to any over age 13
- com was launched
- The Top Song was Irreplaceable by Beyonce
- Lebron was on the Cavs (for the first time)
- Crank That (Soulja Boy) by Soulja Boy debuted
- #TBT: Throwback Thursday is the trend of posting older, nostalgic photos on Thursdays under the hashtag #ThrowbackThursday or #TBT. An old concept, it reached mainstream Pop Culture in 2006.
- Steve Irwin, TV’s Crocodile Hunter, was killed by a freak stingray accident.
